Any help would be appreciated.

Ok I am a new jeep owner and I am looking for a little help in the maintenance and simple modification of my 1988 Wrangler YJ. I had to sell my truck because I have a 45 mile commute everyday and gas was killing my bank account. I picked up this jeep off craigslist for $3500 as a hunting vehicle and it is what I paid for. Needs some work but has a strong engine that runs fine. Are there any reoccurring problems with this year model? Also does anyone have any suggestions to how I can make my cab more air tight, water resistant, and reduce noise? Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I am no mechanic.

Do you have 4 or 6 cylinder motor and is it a hardtop or soft top? What do you want to use your Jeep for? Such as, If your planning on going to 33" tires or bigger, you will have issues with axles. My 4.2 with Carter carb was an issue that I changed to a 2150 Ford 2 barrel. Some go Webber carb. Welcome to the forum and you can find a lot of info on fixing issues or someone can help answer ?.

The only issues with an 88 YJ are whatever has not been replaced. How many miles are on the drivetrain from last overhaul, what is or has it been used for and are there any current mods installed???

You can spend some free time here and see what is happening with the YJs we all own. Clutches, fuel pumps and PO wire hacking along with east coast rust are the major issues.

I have a 4 cylinder motor with a hardtop already sitting on 33'' tires. Its my hunting and fishing vehicle. Some trail riding but mostly my not afraid to get muddy vehicle. I drive a Toyota car as my commute vehicle. I just want to do what I can to make it last a long time.

The guy I bought it from claimed it only had 6000 since its last overhaul but there is no telling. The jeep was the guys get around vehicle when he was not driving an 18 wheeler. There are no current mods installed but I am up for suggestions.

Do you have any rust or rot yet? If so try and nip it in the butt quick by cutting it out hitting it with some rust converter and think about using a bed liner on the interior instead of carpet. Also wouldn't hurt to use a Bedliner on the rocker panels.

I can't give you much insight on the 88 but as for the YJ itself, air tight is a tough one. I use a hard top in the winter and a soft top in the summer. Neither of which are "air tight". I get a nice whistle with the hard top but it seems more water tight than my soft top which sounds more air tight but is definitely less water tight lol

On the hard top leaks, you can get seals for them. I just used a roll of camper or canopy foam tape stuff. Can't think of the real name of it. Also sometimes you have to adjust the roll bar piece that hooks to the windshield to move windshield closer or farther away from door to get better fit. The biggest pain of that is the security torks bolts. I just broke the pin out so I could use a regular torks socket on it.

I have little to no rust on the body and frame. What brand bedliner would you suggest if I were to do it myself and have to keep the price down. I lined the bed of my old truck before with a roll in liner and it was not a fun process so a spray in liner would be nice. Also, I appreciate the help on the top.

I will look into the foam tape as an option. The windshield suggestion should help some too. Thanks.

I am from the TJ forum but the biggest key to ANY bed--liner is the PREP!! If you don't have a full day to remove seats carpet and prep the tub IMO don't even start. Than a half day to mask a spray or roll....let dry till next day and than reassemble..allow 2hrs to reassemble...than go for a ride!!

Might wanna consider removing HT and replacing weather striping at the same time.

So yeah to do a really good job allow 3 days IMO..good luck!!

Could not agree more on the prep time. When you spray or roll the tub do you leave the bolts in or leave the holes open? I have even heard of people plugging them with paper. What do you suggest?

I sprayed mine with the cheap stuff, comes in a rattle can, spent less than $50 six years ago. IMO bolts are a personal preference thing, I left the big seat belt bolt in but "taped" the head, with shrink wrap. It came right off after wards. rest of the bolts were removed, however I have no back seat or even floor mounts for a seat...or seat belts even anymore. did pull all plugs.

some use foam ear plugs to plug the threaded holes..I just use old bolts that are the same thread..spray may be easier but roll on will usually be a lot thicker.I personally like herculiner

I like what I am hearing and plan to get started on the tub immediately. I took the driveshaft off today and noticed some problems with the U Joints so I am going to replace them while I am doing the interior work. Does anyone have any suggestions for any easy mods while the jeep is parked. Suggestions?

I agree with all above comments re: liner. First priority, easy and long lasting
1) remove all mud and dirt
2) lightly scour all surface. Paint should be dull, but don't go as far as exposing the primer! Use MEK solvent before and after
3) use a rust converter on all rust spots
4) tape everything that does not need liner. I personally used liner on the ENTIRE tub, from the tail gate, under the seats and to mid-way up on the firewall at the front

After extensive research, I settled for a liner called Monstaliner (Monstaliner do-it-yourself roll-on truck bed liner outperforms Herculiner Bed Liner, Duplicolor and Rustoleum Road Warrior) and 2 years down the road (literally ) I have to say it's the best thing ever!!! Nice texture, no fading. 1 gallon was plenty for the whole tub, 2 layers and more. Awesome product
