Are all AX-15s the same?

My transmission grinds a little in 3rd and 4th gear. Its bad enough to be annoying, but not bad enough for me to spend any kind of money fixing it. I have been casually searching craigslist and ebay for a dirt cheap transmission, and have come up with one question. Are all AX-15's the same, or were there variances between year, model, and 2wd/4wd? I though that the only difference between 2 and 4 wheel would be a transfer case bolted to the back of it. Do they make a 2 wheel drive model that can't take a transfer case, or have I just seen a few ads by people who have no idea what they are talking about?

As always, thanks for any help.

Not 100% on the 2x4 model but all the 4x4 trans are almost the same. The pilot bearing shaft size is only issue I have seen. Some use a smaller tip and others the big one. The differences come from the bell housing and clutch set ups. So if yours is bad grab any of them and install your clutch setup and your set.
