Can someone tell me if I should have my automatic transmission in L when placing the 4W Drive into 4L? I am not mechanical and just used my 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ for the first time on Ophir Pass in Colorado. I noticed that if you leave the auto transmission in D or 2 it still tries to drive to fast down the steep slopes. I could not find anything about this in my old Users Manual. I assume I should always be in Low with the Automatic Transmission when using 4W either H or L going down hill as the transmission tries to shift higher.
Appreciate a reply. I just thought having the auto in L and 4W in L would be too much of a strain on the transmission but this is the only way it would crawl down the mountain on steep inclines.
