Automatic transmission position when using 4WL

Can someone tell me if I should have my automatic transmission in L when placing the 4W Drive into 4L? I am not mechanical and just used my 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ for the first time on Ophir Pass in Colorado. I noticed that if you leave the auto transmission in D or 2 it still tries to drive to fast down the steep slopes. I could not find anything about this in my old Users Manual. I assume I should always be in Low with the Automatic Transmission when using 4W either H or L going down hill as the transmission tries to shift higher.
Appreciate a reply. I just thought having the auto in L and 4W in L would be too much of a strain on the transmission but this is the only way it would crawl down the mountain on steep inclines.

You're on the right track, just as in 2wd if you want to decrease speed on a downgrade go ahead and downshift the trans into low. As you drive your Jeep more you'll learn what combos to use in different situations.
