AX-5 to AX-15 Swap

Has anyone done this swap or have any info on whats involved in doing it? My 94 has lost 5th gear at 180,000 miles and has become and ax-4 as far as I'm concerned. I can purchase a AX-15 or and AX-5 for the same price from a local Jeep guru. He tears them down and replaces anything that it needs and puts them all back together. I'm just thinking future reliabilty/engine swap options that the AX-15 would be my better choice as long as I'm not spending a grand for adaptors and such at this time to stuff it in there. Thanks in advance fro all the help

Jeff

A common issue with the AX5 is that 5th gear goes out. My question to you is, "Do you really need 5th gear??"
On my 95 YJ 2.5 (with 33's and 4.10s), my 5th gear is almost gone. I never use it. Of course I rarely go over 65mph. If you have over sized tires and 4.10 gearing, you may not need 5th. Look at your RPMs when you are in 4th going around 55-60mph. They should be around 2000-2200. If so, you are good to go.....unless you are driving on the interstate on a daily basis. BTW, I have checked my gas mileage with and without using 5th gear and there was no difference.
If you do swap, I would do the AX15.....the AX5 is CRAP!

Unfortunately I only have 30s for right now. I can accomodate 33s with the lift I have on it but it'll be quite some time before I need new sneakers so Its gonna be a tranny swap for her at this point. Right now at 65 I'm pushing 32 to 3500 RPM. Wish somebody could help me with any info on this swap though......

according to novak conversions they are not interchangable..

"Individuals, hoping to replace their AX5 occasionally assume the AX15 will replace it directly. The bellhousing patterns and spline counts between these similar appearing transmissions are deceivingly close, but not compatible."

Agreed. Will not work. And I don't believe they make a conversion for it. (correct me if I'm wrong)

It can be done. There are some threads around on this. I think you need a bellhousing from a Dakota to do it.

You might be able to repair 5th gear yourself. Usually a "c" clip falls off and the gear just slides back. There is a post somewhere on here that shows you how to do it. In fact I think you can do without taking the trans down.

I have recently put in a V6 in my 1992 YJ. It originally came with a 2.5 and an AX5 tranny. The AX15 is a larger transmission, a taller transmission and a longer transmission than the AX5. Because of that, you will need a new bellhousing and clutch. You may need to fabricate some new shift linkage for the transfer case. You will need to modify your rear drive shaft AND you will need to open up your transfer case and put in the correct input shaft to match the new AX15 tranny. You will also need to match up the speedo input so your speedometer doesn't go crazy. BEST ADVICE!!! Forget what you read and don't do it! If you are happy with your 2.5 and you aren't into rock crawling, the AX5 just needs to be rebuilt. If you take it easy, it should last a long time. That is a lot of work to go to the AX15, if you ain't "hard wheeling."

The AX15 is a better and beefier transmission... but for your use, a rebuilt AX5 will go the distance.

Take care,

So long story short, fu*k that. Don't do it unless you have to. 😜

Thank you so much Garyk, 1SAS, and Blacked out YJ. Through you hard work finding that info, you saved me alot of useless hard work. I do not wheel my jeep severely. It spends 80% of its life on road and it NEVER does any kind of serious rock crawling. Its good to know my soon to be rebuilt ax-5 miight last another 180,000.

there are several writeups and shopping lists for all the parts needed on 4bangerjp.com
Its quite the undertaking but for a vehicle thats mainly a dd or weekend pleasure vehicle you wont need to upgrade.
