AX 5 transmission change

Hi everyone; my son just purchased a1988 YJ with 2.5 I4 AX5 trans & 231 tc. the trans is bad and he found a new (used) trans. we dont know what it came out of but it was mounted to a bell housing with a external slave minus release fork. we decided to stay with the old bell housing which is set up with internal slave due to cost of release fork, bearing and possibly new slave and master cylinder. as we were mounting the new tranny to the old bell housing we noticed that there was so differences between the two trannys particularly the rear case.

Old trans s/n sf8953004224 New (used) trans s/n sf8953003385
-output shaft sticks out 7/16' - output shaft flush with rear case
from rear case flange flange
-distance from flange to seal - distance from flange to seal for
for transfercase 11/16" transfercase is 1 3/8"
-2 electrical plugs 1 two prong -1 electrical plug harness type
and 1 harness type

Everthing else appears to be the same, length of trans, sline count input and output. The main concern is that the rear case seal will not mate up to transfercase, any help would be appreciated.

I would think you will have to try and identify what you have exactly. If you can poost pics if not make a photobucket account and post highlighting your findingss and get some shots so people can help you identify these trannys. There are some real experts here but you knw a picture is worth!!!

If it came with an external slave cylinder, it is from a 93/94 or newer YJ or TJ. Unless it was swapped over at some point.

Yeah I have an 89 with external I did so you can never tell just what you have. This link may help identify what you have but what it is out of for application is just as important. Hope this helps.

Transmission identification?

Here are some pics of the 2 trannys, hopefully they will help clarify some of the things I listed in my original post. The 1st 11 pics are of the trans that was removed from jeep, the 2nd 11 are of the new trans and the last 4 pics are the tc.I have called Novak and talked to a tech, he was surprised and stumped at what I had with the new trans. We discussed the possibility of changing the input on the tc to a long but he had never heard of a long with a 21 spline only 23. We also talked about the possibility of swapping out the rear cases on the trans, this my be the avenue I will have to take.

Well, theoretically the internals should be the same and you could just take out the parts from the new to rebuild the old.

That is an odd dilemma for sure.

Yes you right a real dilemma, that's why I have posted this to see if anyone might have any knowledge of the AX5 and the possibility of any differences in the rear case to support different tc's.
