AX15 swap to NV3550 Swap

So my AX15 just failed going down the highway, and I have a 2.5. I know, I know.

So I am still in shock since it happened 1.5 hours ago and gave no warning, just crapped out while going 65, and I only put it in 2k miles ago. I really just cant believe it. New fluid, never gave me any warning, just failed. Sounded like a bearing on the cluster gear gave way and that fell partially away from the main gear shaft. Very Very Loud, and on my way back from picking up a new to me hardtop for the colder months with rear defrost and a wiper, I was so happy.

SO THE QUESTION I HAVE IS THIS. I am looking for a new tranny IMMEDIATELY. If I come across a NV3550, what would it take to put it in? Is the bolt pattern between the bell-house and tranny the same as the AX15? Can I swap them out? If so would I need to swap the pilot bearing? I currently have a .75" input shaft. What about the throwout bearing, would my external slave bolt right to the bell-house? Please help me ASAP. I found a AX15 for $200 less than the NV3550. Not sure how much stronger the NV3550 is, but I know it IS stronger. If I need to swap a bunch of other parts to get it in it is a no go. If it will bolt right in I might go with that over the AX15. Please hook me up with some good advice guys. It has been a bad day.

Yeah, I upgraded it about 2k miles ago since my ax 5 scrapped out. Paid $190 for the ax15. I guess that is what I get. If you have an ax15 I am sure we could work something out. I shipped my busted ax5 with no problem. I am pulling the tranny Thursday to see what happened. Once I do that I will make a decision ASAP. PM me if you want to sell that ax15.

So, what bellhousing did you use for your AX15 conversion (to a 2.5L)?
I might do this as a precursor for my 5.7L Vortec conversion, would be a good idrea to get the trans in and driveshafts set up before I drop the 350 in.

Sucks to hear about the tranny going out dude Had that happen in my 91 Comanche TWICE (first was AX5, after I6 swap it was a AX15) and once in my 94 YJ (AX5).

I was actually going to post up questions regarding a AX15 swap to a 2.5l. What kind of benefits are there to the swap? All direct bolt-in or are there some mods that have to be done? SUGGESTIONS as to which t-case would be a better option for what I run? Currently have 33" baja claws on stock dana 30 and dana 35 (guessing they're 4:10's, Ive never looked). Any info would be great

97 Dakota bellhouse is what used in mine. Easy swap. I am guessing the tranny I got must have been on its last leg. Seemed solid until it broke. Reason I did swap is because ax5 is horrible and I tore them apart aat highway speeds with 31"s.

I should also add you need to change the input shaft on the TC, the Pilot Bushing (possibly), and Clutch. You also need a different shifter for the TC since it bolts to the AX15 different than on the AX5.

A LONG TIME AGO I FORGOT TO ASK A QUESTION!

he heh

What did you do about the starter?
Dis you have to use the starter from the Dakota?
The AX5 and AX15/NV3550 are clocked differently, with teh AX5 low and AX15/NV3550 higher.
