ax15 Transfer case

im looking for an np231j Tcase from an AX-15

Local 4x4 supply has a fresh rebuilt one for 500.
does this seem like a good deal?
also if anyone else is out there in western washington i would be interested if you have one, im looking for around $200-$300 even if its used, all i care is that its not cracked.

For a rebuilt, $500 sounds like a great deal. I have one from my 93 xj, but I'm positive it has the 21 spline input. If yours is close enough in years like 91-94, you could just swap input shafts. The np231 planetary changed in 95 so it probably wouldn't do you good if thats your year

The rebuild kit for an NP231J is around $160-$180.

And if you would have to replace any gears, or the fork, or the input shaft, the price would go up from there.

Used ones range in the prices from $100-$300, and it's a crap shoot if they are going to last or not.

I would think that the price of $500 already rebuilt is a decent price. Does it give you any kind of a warranty?

Np232J's are plentiful around here, $500 seems a bit high, but if it is what the market will bear.....

If you are looking for a replacement, any transfer coming from an automatic or ax15 (6 cylinder) will have the correct 23 spline input, ax5 uses a 21 spline input, don't mess with swapping input shafts.

So according to this page, the t-case I have would bolt to an ax15. The shifter lever and front output yoke would have to be swapped. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm

C5wagner, you don't list what transfer case you are referring to.....but Jeep did a pretty good job of making swaps relatively easy, all 6 cylinders and automatics have the same bolt pattern and input spline count. Some swaps will require a clocking ring or spacer, or on the extreme an input gear swap....but for the most part I don't think most jeeps would require anything more HD than the D300, which is a pretty straight forward swap with a clocking ring and the correct linkage.

I posted above that it's from a 93 xj automatic. Jeep has done a lot of funky things with the cases. My yj came with a Peugeot ba/10 that had a 21 spline np231 stock and it was a 6cyl. Then my first xj, a 90 6cyl came with a 21 spline case. I tried to turn the 91 np231 I swapped into my jeep when I got the ax15 into an hd np231, but the input bearings wouldn't work with the later style planetary.
