ax5 upgrade

so it comes up all the time "my ax5 keeps going bad, what can i do?" so i just found out a reasonable way to replace the ax5. i heard it brought up once before, but never clarified: dodge dakota 2.5 motors had an ax15 behind them in the 90's instead of ax5. this ax15 isn't that great for some reason. but the solution is that bell housing will allow a poor 2.5 yj owner, and maybe tj (not sure) to put an ax15 trans behind their 2.5

this might not be new to some, but i think it is to most, as i tried to pin it down but couldn't for a while.

so it sounds like you need that bellhousing, but are better off, or need to get a jeep ax15, not just that dakota ax15.

but this is a reasonable solution for one not wanting to change the whole driveline, or change motors, but wants a better trans without buying adapters and changing output shafts.

I am one that has heard of this swap, just never seen it. I so happen to have a wealth of info about this onhand.

Use a late 90's dodge dakota bellhousing on the ax15 to make it bolt up to the 2.5L. AX-15 trans came stock behind the dakota 2.5l, the bell housings can be found at yards, or search car-part.com. Prices vary from $50-100 for the bell housing. You'll also need a new pilot bearing from advance adapters thats around $20, and a mid 80's 4cyl camaro clutch $50-$150 depending on brand.

Full write up can be found here...The AX-5 to AX-15 Swap Thread - NAXJA Forums -::- North American XJ Association

Parts list, your needs will vary some depending on what all you already have with your old trans and what your new ax-15 comes with. Heres if you need everything.

For both INTERNAL and EXTERNAL Slave AX-15

96-98 Dodge Dakota bellhousing from 2.5L
Clutch Disc 84 Camaro 4 cyl 4 speed --- Centerforce P/N 383824 or Autozone P/N CP4198
Clutch Throughout Bearing --- NAPA P/N BRGN4093
Pressure plate --- Keep your stock 2.5L pressure plate for your year
Flywheel --- Get your resurfaced or buy a new for your year 2.5L
Clutch Slave --- Dodge Dakota 96 NAPA P/N UP360045
Clutch Line --- makes it easy to hook up to Jeep master cylinder to Dakota slave Advanced Adapters P/N 716130TJ + 716130H (call them at 805 238 7000 for your application)
Pilot Bushing --- Advanced Adapters P/N 716167 for .750" OD input shaft tip. If smaller .60" OD then reuse stock. Measure the AX-15 with calipers to find out.
T-Case Linkage --- Stock linkage from an AX-15 equipped XJ or NOVAK SK2X
Clutch Shift Fork --- See factory part numbers below if your external slave AX-15 did not come with the throughout bearing linkage

For INTERNAL SLAVE AX-15. You need these parts to convert the AX-15 to external slave.

4636 382 ----- Front bearing retainer (this part can be had from partsmike.com for less $$$ than the dealer but it is still ***
5252 053 ----- Seal front bearing (got it from the dealer its cheap)
5210 7555 ----- Clutch release fork (relatively cheap around $20 from dealer)
5208 7542 ----- Clutch release pivot (cheap from dealer or may come on the Dakota Bellhousing)

excellent, i think this thread should be renamed and stuck. we've had no good info for everyone asking what to do about the ax5 besides change everything.

ax5 upgrade solution or option?

something. any thoughts, i think this is the best option for someone wanting to upgrade, but not able to upgrade everything. or is just fine with their 2.5 work horse motor, but want a trans that will hold up as well as their engine.

here's an ax5 overhaul link: AX5 OVERHAUL write-up (with pics) - JeepForum.com

i guess i'll just keep this subscribed and try to pass it on to all the poor ax5 guys since no one is taking any action. although i think it would be great to gather some ax5 info in one spot, since it comes up almost daily.
