Well you could look around for one with the limited slip which will be better than the open, but not as good a locker. Thus, its up to you. If its a good deal on the open 8.8 then go for it. I am not sure how the lsd in the ford is, but if the axle has higher miles on it, the lsd might not be working that great anyway if it uses clutches. Bottom line if the price is right for the open diff, get it.

Clarify for me.. you contact Jeep dealer to run your vin for the Jeep, or to check to see about the ford 8.8?

Yes, no dana 30 ina YJ would have come with a lsd or locker unless installed after it left the factory. You should be good to go, well good to begin prep work and then install the 8.8. gears match.. so no issues there.

I would upgrade the u-joints in the 30 to the later tj style.. It will live with 35's, but carry spare joints and maybe even spare shafts if you lock it. You can run locker in rear and not in front, or locker in front and not in rear.. does not matter. If in front I would get one you can turn on and off as in bad weather, snow, it will tend to pull you one way or the other.

ford 8.8 or dana 44 at least. I would go with a sye if it were me too. To many times have I seen a driveshaft leave somebody stranded 4 or 5 miles in a trail when the run 35's. Seems like I have never seen much problem with the front ds or the dana 30 (with good joints) with 35's unless you are getting into a lot of 3 wheel action with a front locker.

When I was looking for my 8.8 I only wanted the open carrier. I figured most likely the lsd would not work well if at all, and I wanted to run a lunch box locker and needed the carrier.
