I have a 4 cylinder 5 speed without power steering and it needs a bearing at the top close to firewall. The Parts stores dont offer the bearing so how do I get that part or is it safe to keep driving like it is. It had a lot of play but i got rid of most of it by adjusting the steering box.
Morris does have them. You will have to pull the intermediate shaft to replace it. That will likely be a PIA as it most likely has rusted up well enough that it won't collapse. You may want to consider replacing that shaft as well as the u-joints in them wear out and cause a lot of play. It will make repacing the bearing easier as well since you can just cut out the old one. The shafts run around $120 and $20 for the bearing. The other option is remove the bolts holding teh steering box so you can lower the shaft enough to get it off. Search this forum there are a couple of go-by posts.
I just ordered the complete bearing kit from Morris so maybe this weekend I will be installing it. I hope I do it right. I've never installed one.
Thanks for the replies
