Belt was off, loose fan....

Been searching the threads, but can't find an answer....

The other night while driving, headlights and dash lights went REALLY dim. Like an idiot, my first thought was bad alternator. Took the battery out, checked all my connections (fine) then noticed the drive belt had slipped off.

I have a few questions:

1. The belt is in good shape, what would make the belt just slip off?

I moved the alternator in and slipped the belt back on, then tightened it up. When I started the jeep, the was a vibrating noise, so got out...took a look, and the pulley in front of the water pump was vibrating pretty bad. Turned it off, and noticed the fan is really loose and wobbly.

I have tried taking it off to take a look at it by taking off the nuts and bolts attaching it to the water pump, but can't get it off. I have a Haynes book, and seem to be doing it exactly as described, but nothing, so question #2 is:

2. Should the fan have any front to back play in it at all? I can push it front to back about an inch or so. When I have the drivebelt attached, the fan will not rotate freely with the engine off.

Kind of a long post, just trying to be descriptive as possible. ANY help would be appreciated.

Probably should have included this info:

1987 YJ 2.5l

Still working on it as we speak, and noticing the pulley the fan is attached to (i'm guessing the water pump) is a little loose as well as the fan.

Water pump is my guess also. No play allowed on fan. I would say replace water pump anyway they are like 30 bucks and upgrade the fan to electric off a xj I beleive. Look at fan upgrades it worth it.

Fan should not move like that. if the nuts/bolts seem tight but you can see gapping between the nuts and the fan mount, it could be the bolts and/or nuts are cross threaded. If that is the case you will have to force them and replace those nuts and bolts when you reinstall.

Thanks for the replies...

I will replace the water pump and see what happens. I removed the nuts and bolts that I thought held the fan assembly onto the water pump pulley, but still couldn't get it off.

The bolts are threaded on both ends, so you take the nuts off, then "unscrew" the bolts. I did all of that but still can't get the fan assembly off.

Think it just needs some convincing to come off? Or am I missing something there.

Thanks again for the quick responses!
