Best Gear Oil to Use?

My Jeep has an ax-5 tranny with 186000 miles I don't think the gear oil has ever been changed. What would be the best gear oil for me to use without breaking the bank? Also, do I need to replace the filter? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

the book calls for 75w90 but a lot of guys use 10w30. It depends though is it auto or manual?

lol right

whatever you go with make sure it is GL-4 compliant, some GL-5 fluids have additives that corrode the zinc synchronizing gears

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Manual Transmissions - MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil

Thanks guys. Want to go with Redline but because of time and only being able to find it online I went with royal purple 75w-90. Honestly I think anything in this tranny is better than what it had. Not sure the PO ever changed it. It looks like sludge.

If it looks like sludge flush it with 10W-30 motor oil cheap as you can find and drain again and then put in the nectar of the Gods.

Source?

**EDIT** GL-5 with inactive sulfates are safe, but not all GL-5 oils have these. Anything with brass "yellow metals" as the synchros will corrode and wear.

The original guidance from the manufacturer was in fact GL-5. This was changed later on down the line.
