Brake Lights on the fritz

My '89 YJ is having some distemper. It only wants to shine the bright brake lights when I'm stepping REALLY hard on the brakes. Is this a problem or a feature and does anyone know how to fix/adjust it?

Thanks!

Had to replace the switch on my 89. Just check under the dash, you'll see it. Maybe it moved a bit which would cause what is happening. I'm not sure if there is an adjustment, but after a few of inches of travel they should activate. I would just replace the switch. Too dangerous to mess around with it.

i agree, if they are coming on like you say it should be the switch. you'll see it toward the top of the pedal. it has a little tab that the pedal pushes when you step on it.

i can feel the switch. i can rock it back and forth pretty easily. if i rock it all the way back it turns the lights on and if i rock it all the way forward it turns the lights on too. if i move it forward i can get in and step on the brake a few times and it lights up pretty easily without having to step on it hard. then after that i have to step on it hard.

is it moving out of place? i'm sorry for such noob questions i just don't know how this system works.
