Broken Off Gear Tooth...

Well I was changing my rear diff fluid (dana 35) and upon draining the fluid I noticed some fairly large sparkles and upon investigation I found that the spider gears were kinda chewed up with an entire tooth missing (I think they are the spider gears) what should I do? I want a ford 8.8 but don't have the money right now.... I briefly thought about just welding them and running it till it blows! Well what do you all think is my best bet? Should I just start saving for an 8.8 or just replace the gears.... mind you I have not done anything with axles before......

I looked at new spider gears.... not exspensive, but looks kinda complicated..... uggghhhh so many parts....... I'm scared of differentials!!!...... plz help don't make me "report" myself to get some moderators in here who might be able to help....... is this something I could do (replace spider gears) myself in a crappy gravel driveway? Sorry I'm rambling cuz I'm tired hungry and just being inpatient. Havnt slept in 30 hours and havnt eaten.... no not drugs just got off night shifts and I am not allowed to eat from this morn till tomorrow afternoon cuz of doctor and a procedure and I will leave it at that....

Working on differentials requires special presses and pullers needed. I would not tackle this yourself. I'm not doubting your ability, it's just one of those things.

I also wouldn't weld it either. It won't drive to well on the road.

Oh no two answers at opposite ends of the spectrum..... I think I will get replacement gears and attempt it myself... if I should fail I will take it to a guy that teaches vehicle maintenance/repair that my father knows he should be able to do it for a small fee. Even though it may be easier to just have him do it I want to learn.

no need to disturb any settings for spider gear change out on that one . just flush it out good and check crown and pinion to make sure they are ok and if all good should be ok

I guess I have a lot to learn..... google give me help...... I assume meaning crown on ring gear is like checking crown on a 2x4, making sure it is not warped...

if you have to try not to take the pinion out because you will end up buying a new crush sleeve and its gonna take more to set up the diff again but there may be some pieces of gear up where the pinion bearing is that happened to me

I'm with herbie, piece o cake. Only the ring and pinion require special tools, and as long as they're ok you should be ok. Taking of the cover may be the hardest part of the job.
