bumper/winch question

Hey guys, need some help. I bought this bumper from eBay and I was toying with the idea of a winch. Can I use a winch on this bumper? Do I need a winch plate? I'm a newbie in the jeep world and I can't seem to figure this out, does the winch plate go under the bumper? Thanks in advance your help and knowledge.

BTW, description says it has mounting holes for winch, does that mean I just bolt it right to bumper?

I am pretty sure you need a winch plate. Check the sellers other items and see if they offer a winch plate that works with that bumper. Most bumpers require the plate, I dont think I have seen one that it bolts directly to the bumper.

OK, but does the winch plate bolt on top of the bumper?

There should be four holes in the middle of the lower section if it has a winch mount, typically slotted holes. And yes it would mount to the bumper just like mine. That looks like my bumper without the grill guard.

If you really want a winch, go to 4wd.com and look up the smittybilt XRC 8000 lb. winch and cover special. The price says 324.98, but the ad states a free winch cover. If they haven't updated the ad since I bought mine last week, just send them a question about the price and the fact it states a free cover. The winch is 299.99 and the XRC winch cover is 24.99. They told me to order it and they would refund the 24.99 for the cover since I caught them.

Here is how it will mount, if your bumper has the four mounting holes. the bolt pattern will be 10"x4.5" - 5.5"

I don't see the fairlead mount on the picture you posted, so you will need to buy a winch mounting plate in order to mount the fairlead rollers.

Yours looks like it has the winch plate built right in. When I ordered my bumper a winch wasn't on my mind. It does have holes drilled in it but that's it. BTW, your bumper looks good. Thanks for the link but I'm a few weeks away from having enough cash for the winch.

Yes, mine came with the winch mounting plate built-in. You will just have to get a mount plate with the fairlead mount built-in then mount it to your bumper. Your quite welcome and thanks for the compliment, I sure like it.

One other thing, you will more than likely want the raised winch plate since you are mounting a flat surface.

They said they were going to fix the ad last week, when I purchased my Winch, but they haven't fixed it yet. So, you may get lucky and it still be posted as is when your ready.

Is the raised winch plate necessary? A guy selling one on craigslist in my area for $15 but its the flat channel kind. It will save me $100 if it will work.

You can use a flat plate set up, but you will have to drill the holes to match the bumper, as the the winch bolts come up through the bottom to mount the winch. So if you use a flat winch plate, you could center it, mark the plate holes on the bumper, then drill the bumper so the winch bolts can go through both the plate and the bumper. Would be a strong set up that way. Unless you have room behind the bumper to mount the winch plate directly to the frame, but that may cause the winch cable to drag across the top of your bumper on inclines, due to the fairlead rollers being mount prob. 5-8 inches behind the bumper.

You may want to go look at that winch plate for $15 and see if it will fit behind the bumper, if it has a roller fairlead mount too(most I have seen do), etc. Then go from there. This is why I bought a bumper with the winch mount and fairlead mount built in. I saw bumpers for less, but when you add winch plate, roller fairlead mount, etc. its not really saving anything.

Well, I've been doing some research and apparently all i really need if the fairlead mount. My bumper is supposed to be here tomorrow so before I go buying anything I want to do a test fit on my jeep and see what kind of room I'm dealing with. I talked to the guy with the $15 winch mount and its designed to take the place of the plastic "jeep" cover thing. I'm gonna see if I can hook up with him once I get my bumper on.

Sounds like a good plan. You could add a fairlead mount to the bumper, then just drill the winch mount holes if needed directly into the bumper. That is if the bumper and the bumper mounts are strong enough for winch use. Yes, definitely wait till you get the bumper andd get it mounted. Then go from there.

Well, the description says it has holes drilled for a winch, it also has 2 holes drilled for wiring in the back towards the grill. This bumper butts right up to the grill so no room for a winch plate behind it.....its a freaking beefy bumper. Like I said, I think I just need a fairlead mount to sandwich between the bumper and winch. I could be wrong though......

Sounds like that is all you will need. Just the fairlead mount. but for that 15 dollar flat winch plate, if it has the fairlead mount, you can just use it under the winch and not have to weld anything to the new bumper, messing up the coating on it.

That's probably the most economical choice. Thanks for all your help, I'll update tomorrow when I get the bumper
