Can someone explain the gearing to me?

Ok, I want to be doing some gearing, Ive been hearing good about the 4.10 gearing in the Explorer 8.8. But what does it mean?
and which way is the better way to go? Higher gearing? lower gearing?
Whats good for some light crawling, mudding and Daily driving?
Also, with doing an 8.8 swap, how strong is the D30 up front with it if I change out those gears to match the 4.10?
or would it be necessary to swap in a bigger front axle as well with the same gearing?
Help with these questions would really be great.

It's just that it is a broad subject, and a lot of typing to answer your questions.

Try this

Well here is a bit on choosing gear ratios.

Higher gears(numerically lower) will get you faster but will cost you torque.
Lower gears(numerically higher) will get you slower but will get you more torque.

If you take it easy and don't abuse it you should do just fine with 4.10 on your D30. It also depends on what tire size your going to be running. 33's would be fine. 35's iffy, 37's and larger it would be a good idea to upgrade to a stronger axle.
