Can someone tell me what this is?

Hi everyone. First - love this site. Have had more help found here on my Jeep than anyplace on the nets. Maybe it is something everybody knows, but I do not know what this is - sort of sits over the front axle on the left side. There are black tubes coming from the firewall (? ... it is very dark out and no street lights and it is raining and I can't see all the way) and the black hard tubes have gotten broken (dry rot?). Anyway, followed it past the battery down to the front of the Jeep, and they feed into this thing, and where the two inlets are, there's a black cap that holds them in place. I took the black cap off for the picture.

And perhaps unrelated, at Christmas, my battery died. Would not hold a charge. It was old, so I got a new one, which was fine for a few days, but now it drains out in about a day and a half, completely dead, no lights, even the under-the-hood light is gone. Will start with a jump start. I took it back to the store, they tested it and my engine, everything came back as good. They told me I might have a short somewhere and to use my multimeter to figure it out. Anybody have any ideas? It never did it with the old battery, which it used for the last 2 years, until it died.

But mostly, I'm concerned about whatever this is, the hard black hose has cracked in a number of places and completely crumbled in others. I have been looking online for hours at diagrams to try to figure out what I need to ask for so I can replace it, but I have no idea. And now I'm tired and headachey, so my stubborn hiney needs to ask for some help.

So ... halp!

That's the front axle disconnect, the front axle is a two piece axle assmbly on the passenger side. When you shift it to 4x4 vacuum pulls a shift fork over and slides a coupler over the two halves connecting both of the shafts together. If its not working ie the vacuum line are crap then you won't have 4x4. There is a good write up on this in the stickes about locking the fork over so you won't have to worry about the vacuum lines, I locked mine over with some washers I had laying around.

Oh, thanks so much! I will try the trick with the washers and read the write up as soon as I get a chance, but knowing it is something that won't stop me from driving the car (as soon as I get the battery/short problem sorted out) is a huge relief. Again - thanks!

that would,nt have anything to do with your battery,,,

i know when mine rots out or i snag it on junk when wheeling im going to lock mine in..
