Hello,
Got a question for you mechanical types (yes yes, i'm working on that inclination in myself).
I have a 1990 6cl 5sp, it has the stock 2bl carb on it. since I purchased the jeep about 4 or 5 years back, i've replaced a number of things on it:
plugs, wires, o2, pgr, alternator, trans, clutch, rear main, battery, cat, muffler, exhaust manifold, fuel filter. i'm down to the last few things under the hood to replace. i've got my eye on replacing the dist, cap/rotor and coil next, as well as possibly the carb.
Here's what it's doing. Just got the trans working again. i've noticed recently, right before my trans issue, that the engine sputters a bit unless i am steadily accelerating in the lower gears. this is instantly noticeable in the first 3 gears if you back off of the gas for a second. even if you are in a gear, at neighborhood speeds. lets say i'm in 3rd running about 35 mph. this would normally be a perfectly fine speed/rpm combo for this gear. lately, when doing this, it sputters, making me speed up. so now it's time to shift into 4th, or coast in neutral if going downhill or upcoming stop. so i get into 4th, and in the lower end and middle of the gear, same thing. it's not until i get into 5th, and keep it over 60 that this stops. now, if i let of the gas at all, even at that speed, it'll sputter a little. like it's having problems breathing or something.
i'm assuming the carb probably needs to be rebuilt, at the very least, or replaced. now, I don't give a crap about swapping out the motor for a V8, or putting in the military grade carb that will let me drive through 18 feet of water with 25% more hp than the stock. i just want the thing to run, i don't need it modified. so my question is, does this sound like a vacuum issue in the carb? will replacing it be better than rebuilding the one i have? i saw some rebuild kits, but they specified that they do not include the stepper motor and vacuum cylinder. i found the stepper motor in an exploded view. not sure where or what the vacuum cylinder is, if i have one, if it is needed, all that.
i need some direction. anyone have any ideas?
