charging issue

i have a problem with my 87 yj . if you jump start the battery it will run all day with a dead battery but if you pull the cable it will die and not start .. but if you jump it again it will fire right up and run fine like it will gernerate the power but it won't charge .. but sometimes when i am driving it will kick the needle on the dash back to the charging position like it charges here and there how is that?

i had the same problem last week. i disconnected all wires, removed the alternator and took it apart. cleaned the slip rings, cleaned all wire terminals, reinstalled the alternator and reconnected the wires. all is good. this is easy. do not panic or sweat the small stuff.

yeah i am going to take the alt off and check it out but if you go on Advance Auto Parts - quality auto parts and accessories and look up the alternator for a 4.2 on a 87 wrangler it says something about a tech tip and i can't find it because that could be my problem

INSTALLATION ALERT! A blown fuse or bulb in the warning lamp circuit may cause a "no charge" condition. Verify that battery voltage is present at terminal "1" of the alternator plug.; See Tech Tip # 598; Test Chart Page # UNIV pg 1

That is what it says and i couldn't find it anywhere to see what it was talking about ..

I would just go ahead and replace the alternator, sounds like thats the problem anyway. I dont think they are real expensive.

by cleaning and maybe replacing the brushes you may extend the alternators life by 90,000 miles or so. cleaning is free and brushes about 20.00.
