I had a soft clutch problem too. Turned out it needed to be replaced. When I pulled the tranny the friction plate was "ok" but the pressure plate was junk. Good luck with the repair, it's doable but I highly recommend begging, borrowing or stealing a transmission jack it will make the job a whole lot less miserable.
