Clutch...master or slave???

I've read a number of posts on this but have not seen a definitve opinion...

The Jeep is a 1991 4 cyl 5 speed. Some might remember I bought this and it was really rough...I'm happy to report after LOTS of hours the Jeep is really looking good and runs pretty good with 192,000 miles on the clock. I initially posted and asked about an exhaust manifold. What any easy swap. So far working on the Jeep has not been terrible.

I just finally got the title transferred and put tags on it last tuesday. Drove it to work a couple of days and had no issues. Friday afternoon I jumped in it and the clutch pedal was 'off' a bit...very soft, I could rapidly 'pump' it up and it felt a little more normal. When I did drive it a short distance a couple of times it felt like the clutch 'stuck' in the engaged postion...even thought I heard it pop and release at one point.

Came home and checked the clutch master cyllinder reservoir and it was empty...filled it and it worked. This morning jumped in it...first couple of pedal pushes were ok...then the clutch was gone. Limped home and popped the hood...clutch master cyllinder is dry.

The questions...

I see no fluid dripping anywhere...would this then be an internal master cyllinder leak?

What is the concensus...clutch is not moving, master cyllinder is empty, no visible leaks...is it the clutch master cyllinder or the clutch slave cyllinder?


Side note....anyone selling a good used '94 or '95 bellhousing to convert to an external slave cyllinder set-up should that be the problem

What you're describing Rover, is the classic conditions for a complete Clutch Job. It Aint' good news. Find yourself a good clutch shop Mechanic.

Is that based on the 'sticking' description?

I have paperwork from the previous owned, supposedly this is a new clutch and clutch master cyllinder, installed about 10 thousand miles ago...in October of 2009 by his 'trusted' shop. I'm going to contact him tomorrow to see if there is a warranty, if so, how long, etc.

I actually have another clutch assembly for it to install...

I have not looked under the dash but I'm wondering where the fluid has gone from the clutch master cyllinder.

I would say it is more hydraulic issue simply sue to lost fluid in the reservoir.
As you have learned you have an internal hydraulic systemand will need to drop the tranny to replace the slave. If you are able to find a 94/95 extrenal housing it would be a great investment to reduce time in the future, you will need to check the input shaft to make sure it is the same size. If you decide to keep what you have for now then change both the slave and master at the sametime due to them having the same life expectacy. Have the clutch,pressure plate and throw-out bearing checked while it is down and replace if need be to keep from dropping it again soon..
If it were the clutch causing the initial problem there would have been slippage duing shifting, you didn't mention any so therefore I lean towards the hydraulic part of the equation.

No slippage...the clutch felt good.

So what is the general concensus...slave cyllinder bad rather than the clutch master cyllinder?

One more question...what sort of time to replace the slave cyllinder? 3-4 hours?

I am going on the prowl for a '94-95.

I vote cylinders not clutch assy.
Changing intenal s/c and m/c alone will be several hours with lil experience.
Changing over to external assy. several more hours do to checking drivetrain length to make sure f/r drive shafts are still correct length , shifter clearance with tub and if everything goes without a hitch,which we all know never ever happens.
