Cork or Rubber

My buddy just got a 93 YJ and is needing to replace the valve cover gasket n is trying to decide which to go with. Cork or Rubber gasket? Any advise would be great.

My advice is cork, with proper RTV sealant. I read a lot about rubber leaks when used as valve covers or oil pans, etc. Rubber, in my experience, is the best materiel when dealing with couplings and sensors and low-pressure things. I could be 100% wrong---just my 2 cents. Cork and RTV have never done me wrong in valve covers, pans, differentials, etc.

Once again this has confused me more, because so many people recommend the fel-pro rubber n metal gasket over the cork and rtv. But thanks for the advise. The more the better.

I took the leaking rubber valve cover gasket off when I got my jeep and replaced it with cork. 5000 miles and still dry

Y'all can see why I'm torn between rubber or cork. It seems like there is a 50/50 like of both. Installing the rubber gasket is straight forward.
What's the proper way to install cork? Do u use RTV on both sides? What's the proper torque on the bolts? This is going on an 4.0L.

I have heard all the different ways to use a cork gasket. But I just make sure everything is good and clean and put the cork on dry. Only rtv I use is a few dabs on the valve cover to hold the gasket up while I put it back on. And I just use elbow torque....

they both work fine if properly installed on a clean surface
the rubber ones usually leak because they were deformed from over-tightening
