Creative lock fix

I bought a set of full steel doors and am now rebuilding them.

This is the story of the drivers door latch. I disassembled the drivers door so that I could weld up the cracks in the shell and outer panel that typically occur at the vent window.
I found both latches full of crud.

When Mrs. Lucky Mac wasn't looking I snuck the latches into the dishwasher, hoping that the dishwasher would make them bright and like new.
Didn't happen.

Pic 1 is prior to the dishwasher.
Pic 2 is after the dish washer. Better, but not clean.
I am soaking one in solvent overnight and when both are soaked, they go back in the dishwasher.
Then they both get a good dose of spray white grease.

The drivers latch was missing the rod from the outside lock cylinder down to the latch assembly.
Pic 3 is the lock rod from the other side with an old coathanger (old--as in heavy. Not like the flimsy ones that the cleaners give us today).
Pic 4 is the old lock rod and the new one. Took me about 10 min.

I can only post 4 pics per post. Next post will be the new clip and rod in the latch.

Good Luck, L.M.

More Door latch stuff

The plastic clip that retains the lock rod in the latch was broken. The original was blue. I found a yellow one that, while it wasn't a perfect fit, I think it will work well. NAPA part #735-2637. A Ford clip.

Pic 1 is the new hand made lock rod in the latch with the new clip.

Pic 2 is the latch close out panel that was missing. Pic is the passenger door. Obviously I have that one. I need the close out panel for the drivers door.
I've posted for a replacement close out panel on this forum in "Parts Wanted" but haven't got any responses yet. Apparently the last guy that was in there thought he knew more than the engineers that made the close out panel. He must have been really smart. He left the weathershield off too.

Since he left the plastic weathershield sheet off, the weather damaged the inside of the door trim panel so I will be posting how I made a pair of new trim panels.
Will probably post that in the next couple days. I have about $40.00 in two trim panels and about two hours so far. I have probably another hour to spend before they are done.

Hope this helps a fellow Jeeper. Good Luck, L.M.

I couldn't find anyone who makes a replacement lock cover panels...after a few weeks I found one on ebay...I was mising the drivers side. Although they look similar the CJ ones won't fit...has to come from 91-95 full doors. The yellow clips work fine that what used. Did you get a key for your locks with your doors? I tried to get mine rekeyed to match my half door key...didn't happen..91-95 doors take a completely different key type. Good Luck!

My doors are from a 1992, according to the VIN tag on the drivers door. Good to know that I need one from '91-'95 model years.

Do you know if a lock cover from a TJ will work? There is an ad on CL where a local guy is parting out a fire destroyed TJ. The doors are badly burnt, but the lock cover should be useable if a TJ panel will fit a YJ.
MM has YJ parts manuals as a link. Does anyone have access to a TJ parts catalog so that I can check part #s?

I will take the locks that came with the doors, that have no key, to my local locksmith. He was able to make a key for my tailgate because when I bought my Jeep, the tailgate key was lost by the PO.
I'll probably take my tailgate lock to the locksmith too, so that he can replace the guts of the tailgate lock and have them all match. I'm glad we had this conversation. Saves a call from the locksmith telling me he can't match my tailgate to the door locks.
My half doors have no locks. I guess Jeep thought that would save a bunch of cut tops.

Thanks and Good Luck, L.M.

"Vehicle Specific Catalogs and Manuals"

There are parts catalogs up until 2005. I thought I had some in my folder, but guess not. I'll probably add them one by one to my folder when I have time, but spring semester just started...

I have some XJ stuff too, but I found that my library has access to Chilton Library with almost as much info, including labor time estimates.

The door locks from 91-95 take a key that is cut on both sides...I would image your tailgate has single cut side key, like mine. .I briefly looked at TJ doors and IIRC they won't work...might wanna double check that...it been a while since I did the research..

Earlier in this thread I stated how I snuck my door latches into the dishwasher.
At lunch today I asked Mrs. Lucky Mac if she had noticed anything different about the dishwasher.
She said, "No, everything is just fine".
I said "I was just wondering. I washed a couple Jeep parts in there the other day".
She replied "You mean the door latches? That's not the first time you've done something like that. I just ignore it".

Go figure? I guess I'm not as smart as I think.

Good Luck, L.M.

I gave up on using home appliances for my projects after the shotgun barrel bluing incident with the oven...

I soaked my door latches in purple power for a few days...went over them with a wire brush, rinsed and applied some PB garage door lube....good stuff it's designed so dirt does not stick to it...also use it to lube the cables on my pop up..

Thanks for the idea for the lock rod...I was missing one too.just hadn't got around to replacing it yet....found a welding rod with the correct diameter, knocked the Flux off and used a piece of it...could only find the cheap coat hangers around the house...lol

I'm waiting on the toaster oven to go so I can use it for bearings... It's on the fritz. My homemade smoke bomb endeavor of middle school still scars my parents, as I ruined a pan with stump remover... I found it better just to buy a turkey baster for brake fluid, and buy a toilet bowl brush for an axle housing. It would be hard to explain the black marks on the bowl brush...
