i have an 1988 YJ with the 4.2 in it, it has alot of carb issues. eventually i want to go with a howell fuel injection kit(not in current budget), but Im looking for a good replacement carb to get me by until then(needs to be CA smog legal), i searched for reviews on the crown carb but came up empty
has anyone here used the crown on their YJ? how did it work out?
or anyone have any other suggestions?
thanks

Dred, I would say that all of the original emissions system is there since he is in Cali and has to be smog compliant.

I haven't personally used the Crown replacement carb, so I wouldn't be able to comment on it. But I doubt that it would be compliant since it isn't an original.

Over the years of working with carbed vehicles and bikes, I try to rebuild the factory carb and keep it original. Your considerable emissions equipment needs to be understood along with the reasons and functioning.

The more pieces that are non OEM, the harder time you will have passing emissions.

Pics of your current carb?

im not sure the factory carb can be rebuilt, the previous owner had a hack shop work on it and they stripped out or messed up the idle mixture screw threads(the one on the front of the base of the carb on the right) and there is a huge air leak passed the screw.
The screw is so loose in the threads you can move the screw 1/16 of an inch up and down(you can hear the air going threw and idle cleans up and starts running good if i hold my finger over it). the previous owner said he could never get it to idle, i got it to idle but its still not right. I thought about just getting it set right then filling the hole with silicone but I want to fix it right.

ill try to get a pic of the current set up

There are so many folks on here that can't or won't fix there Carters BBD's, and change them for something else, that some one should Cheaply sell you a good carb that just needs to be cleaned and adjusted the right way. Sorry you can't have mine I'm Still using it and it works Great. The PO had a Shop do a normal modern mechanic job on it and mess it all up, [missing parts, chop job on Vac. lines, etc..] so I had to do the Nutter By-Pass and use the older BBD with out the stepper motor because I don't use the onboard Computer, good Luck!
P.S. the Carter BBD was good enough to give the 1954-57 Hemi's a real good reputation they good enough for me.

I was having problems with my Carter BBD idling and I researched new carbs. I was able to repair my existing carb but my research found National Carburators in Jacksonville FL. Their website makes great claims. I haven't ever dealt with them though.
Good Luck, L.M.
