Dana 35 spider gear and carrier replacement cost

Hello all. I have used this forum religiously for years, but have never had a need to post until now. My situation is this: I have a 1992 YJ 2.5 in the shop after I stopped getting power to the rear end. It is in a well established and somewhat personal off-road shop that I have used before with no complaints. He told me today after troubleshooting the rear end that "the spider gear is destroyed and it took the carrier with it." I have a fairly decent idea of what the spider gear alone would run me, but I am at a loss for what a fair price would be for spider gear and carrier replacement. I have no desire to attack this project on my own since I am already on the hook for the tow to the shop as well as the diagnosis fee. I was quoted $850 for parts and labor, which he said he is replacing with stronger than stock equipment because OEM is known to fail; as he has already done 4 or 5 of these this year. This is my main mechanic, but I am looking for any thoughts on $850? Bear in mind that I am ASSUMING that $850 includes $55 for tow and $1-2 hour diagnosis. Thank you.

I think I paid $400-450 but that was about 10yrs ago.

I would think they would pull the rear diff cover within 30 minutes to check, not 1-2 hours for sure. You could do it yourself much cheaper than $850 for sure, but if that is not an option I would think at most $700 including the tow would be more close to a fair deal

I think I would find a used rear with the same ratio to replace that first.

Depending on what the mechanic is going to do, 850 seems a bit high but not far out of what I would expect. For that money though I would expect, at a minimum, new axle bearings and races, New carrier and gear set, and new seals all around.

Mostly because if those pieces flopped around enough to destroy the carrier, its very possible they got down the tube and could eventually eat the axle bearings.

about 7yrs ago the company I worked for paid $700 for a complete rebuild. My '99 F150 lost both axles, bearings, carrier bearings, gear set, and rear seals at 75,000 miles. Granted, I had that truck loaded to the nuts, but that convinced me that the f150 was no longer a work truck.

I just asked about the strength of the Dana 35. You can view my other posts. If mine broke, I would look for the Ford 8.8 (that's the ring gear size) rear end. It's found on the Ford Explorer and most like the ones from 95 and up as they have disk brakes. Lot of info on this on the net. If that is not an option I would go to a junk yard for parts though it might be faster to let your garage do it though it sounds expensive to me. Maybe you could find someone near you on the forum that could help.

I have a dana 35 carrier with spider gears for 3.73 and up split for sale. also have the 4.10 ring gear and pinion. I just upgraded to the 8.8. Pm me if you are interested. Carrier & spider gears & pin. All in great shape
