Start by taking measurements and compare them. Measure perches and shock tabs center to center and see if they match if they do you are in luck. The gear ratio must match the front if you want to use 4wd.

Jeep MJ and XJ Dana 44 are the same with as any jeep Dana 35. I run a XJ Dana 44 in my YJ. With that said here what you do

1) Cut off all perches and shock mounts. If you want to re use them then take care when cutting them off

2) Take mesurements on your YJ. From outside the leaf springs near the perches on both side of the perch. Measure from the perch to the backing plate of the drum on each side.

3) Remove crappy Dana 35

4) Install Dana 44 use the perches you cut off or new ones. Bolt the axle to the leaf springs per measurements you took from the Dana 35. Once you get your pinion angle and properly aligned then weld perches in place.

5) Install brake lines and E brake cable.

6) Enjoy the fact that the Dana 35 is no longer under your jeep.

Once you get all that done I can tell you how to put the Ford 8.8 disc brakes on the Dana 44

I prefer the Dana 44 over the 8.8 but thats my opinion. Both axles have there pros and cons but both are pretty equal. 8.8 is narrower, and little off center. then the 44. Wheel spacers maybe needed so you dont rub the springs. If you get the new one with disc brakes there little stronger then the 44 that have a 31 spline shaft instead of the 44's 30. 8.8 is C cliped so removing axle shafts will require you to pop the diff cover, drain fluid and remove C clips. Both have the same rations available to them. 8.8 are easy to come by while the Dana 44s are not as Jeep only put them in the 87-89 XJ, and MJs. Not sure what rig it comes from but there is a stock 8.8 with disc, LSD with 4.10 gears

How do you tell what the gear ratio is?

Easiest and most accurate way is to pop the cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears. Ring gear teeth divided by pinion gear teeth equals ratio.

change of plan, they decided not to sell the dana 44, so its back to a custom ford nine inch. any cons to this swap?

I believe the Dana 44A in the grands might have had it but not the MJ or XJ. Dana 44A is crap dont get it. Its a Dana 44 with an aluminum housing instead of cast steel.
