Dash Dimmer

Hey all - first time poster. Just bought a 1990 YJ 4.2L a few weeks back and been working on it non-stop. One issue I am having right now is getting the lights to work on the dashboard (gas, battery, oil etc). I pulled out the dimmer switch and that is obviously the problem. Multimeter shows its dead and its completely rusted through and through.

Can I by pass the switch completely? There are 4 wires on the back of it, not sure what they all do. I wouldnt have a problem just putting in a simple on\off switch but not sure how to wire it.

If I waned to replace it, would this part work? It's not vehicle specific but looks pretty close to the one that is bad. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__3039994-P_411_R|GRPSESWAMS____

Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance!

I had the same problem. What I did was find the hot wire from the running lights switch (the wire that becomes hot when you turn the switch on) then ran it to the positive wire on one of the RPM gauge lights. It then backfeeds into the entire system lighting up all of the dash lights when I flip the running lights on. Eliminated the dimmer switch altogether, as the lights really aren't all that bright for me anyways.

I believe the two outermost of the 4 wires are for the dash lights. just hook them together and the lights will come on with the headlights. look down thw page or on page 2 or three. another thread discussing this fix. page 2 of the threads, 19 down.
