Question dash lights

hello WF, recently had the dash lights behind the fuel and temp gauges go out, I'm assuming by the ambient light behind part of the temp gauge that there's only a few bulbs back there, not one for each. My question here is how hard is it to get behind there? also I was thinking about going with a diamond plate cover there anyway, is this worth doing, or simply for looks?

daimond plate is just for looks, i have the chrome one. and it is very easy to get to those lights. its 6 philip head screws to get the center dash out and then another 5ish to get the gauge cluster out, VERY quick and easy

Question

thats totally reassuring, now do i have to take the dash over the wheel off or just the middle section? its too dark to look at it right now, im going to look at it when I get off of work in the morning.

just the middle, its 3 screws accros the top and 3 across the buttom. middle left and right. just becareful when u take the guage closter off u dont touch any of the gauge pins, if u do the guage becomes in-acurate

I recently did the same change in my Jeep. However I switched to green LED's over using bulbs again and I must say. I love how they look, big difference! Here is a picture of the before and after.

Just so you have an idea of what you could do. Go to superbrightleds.com and order a few LED's and do the whole dash. If I remember correctly you only need 7 bulbs (one is your 4 wheel drive selector which will light up differently as well) and they are all the 194 style bulb. Really easy and you can color coordinate to your vehicle color.

as far as the lights go 89jeepyj, calls for 194/pc194, 1445, or group 74 bulbs, so you'll probably need to actually look at the bulbs, they should have a part number on the actual bulb itself, but i assure you it'll be hard to see, and quite small the leds on that site (superbrightleds.com) are:
PC194 = T10S-TW
194/194B/194NA/194G/194R = WLED
PC74 = T1.5
1445 = BA9S
so... check the bulb in the manual first the 194 is a smaller bulb that just pushes in

oh and blind, they come in clusters from 1 LED all the way to 6, which bulbs did you use? looks like going with the single LED is obviously the cheapest route, and i really like you pictures, nice and bright...

I went with just the single LED, I didn't see the need for anymore than that and I am really happy with how they turned out.

You are welcome. It took some time and research before I figured out what LED's and how many to get and what not. So if I can save you guys and gals some time. It was all worth it.

the singles are perfect

the single leds are plenty bright, you need the ones that replace the 192 bulb, and they're very easy to replace, pull the dash out and i think i bought 10, and used 7, but i also replaced the 4wd indicator, and the bulb inside the heat control face....super easy took me less than an hour to pull it all apart, replace and put back together

hopefully you can see it all in the full view pic

or i can be a little more specific for ya wvhillbilly and tell you that the ones i used were the T3-1/4 (#194/168) Replaces: 194, 158, 168, 12256, 12961, should be the 194 in most of them, i know all the yj's have those, but call up a part store if you really want to and ask them what kind of dash bulb you take, and they should be able to fix you up with the part number of the bulb; company doesn't matter, part numbers are the same throughout

I'm doing the same job on my 95 YJ. The speedometer and tach both went out last year so I decided to take the plunge and just do them all. I'll just state the obvious that this is one of the easiest jobs I've ever done on a car. The 2 instrument clusters (speedo/tach and oil/temp/volt/etc) come right out and each has a big connector on the back for easy removal.

There are 2 types of bulbs: the type #194 (all the instruments like speedo and tach) and the type #74 for the turn signals and various other idiot lights.

It takes 7 of each type.

Here are the links for superbrightleds.com:

Type #194
Type #74

Here's where I got the information on what types of bulbs are in my Jeep:

I got my LED order in yesterday and did the replacement today.

The good news is the green #194 LEDs went in and lit up, no problem.

The bad news is the white #74 LEDs were not reliable i.e. some worked, some didn't. So I put back the original bulbs and replaced just the one that had burned out. My plan had been to just go replace all of them in one go. I found that if I replaced all the idiot lights with LEDs, they *all* didn't work. If I just replace one, that one would work. Weird.

Something to note about these LEDs. The #194 type are non-polarized, meaning you can put them in either way and they'll light. However, the #74 type are polarized, so you have to make sure you get the little white dot on the LED with the + side on the circuit board of the instrument panel. Apparently putting the polarized ones in backwards won't hurt them but they just won't light. So you have to switch the direction if it doesn't light and see if that works.

My 89 needs 10, 194 bulbs and 8, 74 bulbs, minimum. Depends on how your dash layout is. My Jeep has the 4wd indicator incorporated into the center dash cluster, and the other gauges are temp, fuel, clock, oil pressure, and voltage.

thank you for the reply. will definitely have to add this project to my list as well. i use to hate lists (i.e. honey-do list). but since i am now a first time jeep owner i am beginning to love my "i'm in the garage/dog house" list.
