Differences between 87 and 88 YJs in regards to the top

Hi there! I have a 1987 YJ with full doors from a CJ. My top is worn out and it's time to start thinking about a new one. There's one on ebay made by rugged ridge for $329, but it says it fits YJs from 1988 on. How different is the 88 model from the 87 model? Can I get away with this top, or do I need to spend more? I'm on a tight budget.

I just went through the same problem and this is what I was told by quadratec. They said 87 never had a soft top option that's why they say 88-95. 87 factory option was no top and half doors or hard top and full doors this is from the quadratec staff. My 87 infact had a softop but here's the problem my 87 frame is slightly different then 88-95 frames.

I'll try to explain it, but if you don't understand I'll go snap some pictures. The back window channel is different from a 87 frame and a 88 frame. Two parts of the back windows zip in while the other 2 have channels. The bottom has a flat channel like the rest of the top and the side that goes next to the door has a round rod that slides in place. On a 88-95 the back window channel next to the door is flat like the rest of the top. If your frame takes a round rod you will need a new frame for a new top. If your frame has flat channels by the door you can get the new top.

A new top will fit with the rod style but you won't be able to secure your window from that side. I ended up finding the right frame on craigslist for $25 never hurts to look.

The frame I have now has a vertical round rod that contours to the rounded back edge of the door. It bends around the door, if that makes any sense... The back window part wraps around this rod and velcros to itself. The top and back of the back window attach by zipper to the top and the bottom uses a standard channel like the rest of the top.

So you would need a new frame for any top that says 88-95. The cheapest top I found for a 87 was $550 from best top. The top will physically fit your old frame but the window part next to the door won't be attached. I ran my new quadratop like that with the front part out till I found a cheap frame

I'm on a shoestring budget... How difficult do you think it would be to convert the frame? Is it just that front bar? Without seeing how it attaches, it's hard for me to picture.

I can't say how hard it is to mod your frame. But if you are in serious need of a top I say buy the new one and deal with those 2 pieces its honestly not that bad. There is the slightest road noise created by them. Doesnt get that much air in there if your top is tight and snapped in properly. I ran it like that for 2 months before I found a frame for $25 on cl. I figured the flapping noise was better then my old top that leaked and was ripped every which way. It really would of fell apart with all this snow pa is getting
