Disable shift lock on column shift automatic

I have an 89 wrangler w/ auto trans. I am installing a push button start and my only problem is what do i do about the fact that you have to have the key in to shift out of park? My understanding is that the locking mechanism is mechanical, therefore, the push start would be able to get the system into run and start, but would not disengage the shifter lock? Does anyone know how to bypass, or is it electronic, i.e. when I flip the toggle to run it will unlock it???? Any help is much appreciated, I don't want to start installing the push start if it isn't going to work without the key.

Insert your key, turn to on. Push button to start.

Haha thanks. I am not quite that retarded. The push start is being hooked up in line with an electrinic keypad kill switch so that in order to use the push start, you have to type in the 4 digit code. The whole purpose of the push start is for my convenience and not even having to use a key, like most things we do with our Jeeps, its not necessary or in any way justifiable, but its cool and I'm gonna do it anyways.

I would like to still retain the ability to use the key, so say I valet or let my friend drive, I dont have to give out the key code to everyone. Thus, the whole purpose of the push start is to not have to use my key...

Key lock is mechanical. Physically locks the steering column.
Either use the key or fully rip out the the ley lock. (And lose one of your security measures.)

Yes it could probabiy be done with some type of solenoid mechanism. It would take a bit of engineering. Not sure the effort is worth "cool".
