distributor seal?

i think my distributor has a leak. if i go thru some mud puddles or water puddles after a while the jeep starts to spudder and the idle dips and rises. i want to try and seal the distributor to see if it solves it. is it safe to use rtv silicon to seal it or will it create more problems than it solves. i hade to use it to fix a coolent tank on a lathe at school so i know it is resistant and strong.

You can use it to seal the cap to the distributor, but dont use it on the plug wires, use NEW WIRES and Dielectric grease (the grease repels water).
