Drip Drip Drip Goes the Oil

Thought I had taken care of the oil leak but now there is another one. It is mainly dripping off of my starter, on the passanger side of the block and the flywheel guard and under the oil filter and a little under where the distributer connects to the block. I know the oil filter seal is good cause nothing is around it just underneith it. The major amount is coming off of the starter. I was wondering if this would sound like an oil pan gasket or possibly the rear main seal gone bad. Thoughts anyone?

Don't know what you did before. Clean the entire engine, including the pan area at a coin op car wash and then check again to see where the oil is coming from. You may have a valve cover gasket that has gone bad, a pan gasket, there is also a gasket at the distributor. If its an early model the gasket at the fuel pump may be leaking along with the dip stick tube. Or it may be coming from a rear main seal....

so , now that he told you everywhere it mint be leaking oil from, it is now time to kill you , as you know all of the possible areas of destruction to your driveway , as you innocent baby jeep lay ther in a cold dark driveway crying its oil drops out ,for you left it lonely too long!!!!!!

On my 4.0 I had oil coming down my flywheel cover and some other spots. Thought it was the rear main seal so I did that and it turns out I wasted my time. My valve cover gasket was bad and it was pouring out the back of the cover. Wasted alot of time doin the main seal for nothing haha.

Mine was leaking in the same place and it ended up being that my oil dipstick wasnt completely pushed in. So make sure your oil dipstick is all the way in before you start spending money.

I had the same problem,I had to put a new oring on the dipstick tube

my first post have ben having the same problem with my 94 jeep wrangler,4 liter.have put new valve cover gasket on it. still leaks so did the rear main seal and oil pan gasket.still leaks,done some reading on here.so got to looking it is coming out my dip stick it looks like,so got one on the way in also went ahead and got the ccv vent and the vent hoses.
just bought the jeep about 2 week ago,so i plan to make sure i get the oil leak fixed.
so if this dont fix it iwill take it to someone else to look at it.is there aqnything i am missing,oh by the way doesnt have any blowby,also run great except oil leak.

If its the 4.2 check the oil pressure sensors/switch. There are two switches, one for the light and one for the gauge. They both have an electrical plug connected to them. Over time the plastic around the electrical connection prongs gives and oil will leak out and manage to spray that side of the engine.

I snapped a picture of what to look for. Mine is almost new and I think it's leaking already.

Autozone has dye kits for engine, trans, A/C, power steering that when this dye is put in the system and ran for ten-fifteen minutes you can see with a special light. I hunk the whole kit is about $25-$30 and is well worth it. I suggest stop and get some put it in and drive home. When you get home turn on the light and look for the highest sign of the dye this is most likely your problem. Then go ahead and address the leaking component. Just remember that you will need to clean off the component that is leaking really good before you do it again so as not to confuse yourself with a false leak so to say.

I had an oil leak in the same area on the passenger side and it was the oil pressure switch, as Cashcrazy suggests

I seem to be having the same sort of problem. It seems as if it is coming off the rear seal any other way to tell it is the valves cover? I also think it might be my dip stick

what works best for me is to spray it all down with engine degreaser and hose it off..follow the directions..then crank it and look for the leak..all the places listed above are possibilities..the highest place that you find oil is where it is coming from..valve cover gasket is always a likely candidate

X2 what Harley said clean it really good then crank it drive around the block and look.

Not to be a terminology policeman but the part cash crazy is referring to is called oil pressure sending unit and feeds the pressure gauge on your dash. And it is for the 4.2l engine not sure it is the same for all model engines.

My rig is current leaking from the oil pan gasket and drips on the fuel line going to the fuel pump from the tank so remember oil can drip and run far gravity and air Force from driving can confuse us all.

Good luck and let us know where you find the leak is?

I suggested the dye kit. This way you won't have the wind force or any other effects other than gravity effecting where the oil is coming from. All you do is put it in and let your engine run for 10-15 mins and it starts to show itself where it's leaking from.

dye might work good,I have no idea.I'm just old and stuck on the same way I have done things that have worked for me since moby dick was a minnow...but if you degrease it and wash it off it will do the same thing..you don't have to drive it..if you just crank it and let it run you will usually see it in just a minute

yeah,I knew you were baiting me but that's cool cause I like being old. I laugh at most of these new fangled troubleshooting techniques too for problems that we have been finding at little or no cost for decades...

I'm old too and need a recommendation for the best valve cover gasket for a 2005 Wrangler X. I would like one similar to the lube locker that eliminates the use of RTV sealant. Thanks
