Driveline noise on deceleration

Any help here from my fellow Wrangler Forum buddies? The problem started on a few days ago. Heard a loud metal clunk when accelerating from a stop sign and hit a small pothole. Right after that, I began getting noise and feeling a knock from somewhere underneath when decelerating. It happens with the clutch in or out, or with the transmission in neutral. The rate of the "knock" is proportional to the speed at which I'm moving. If I'm stopped, there is no noise at all, it's only when I'm moving. No noise or issues while accelerating. Got underneath this morning and checked driveshaft play. There was a little bit there, but not horrible. Changed out the front U-joint on the rear drive shaft. The rear U-joint was fine on the rear driveshaft. In this video (can't see anything as I just laid my phone down under my seat to record the sound) you can hear the noise when I let off the gas pedal from :04-:08, :17-:20, :24-:29, and from :35-:44. Any help here is appreciated!!

If you checked all the u joints and your sure there good, then I would venture to say that it's probably coming from your rear ring and pinion not meshing properly. You might get lucky and it may be something as easy as a loose pinion nut. If it does turn out to be your re-end your gunna want to pull the cover for a thorough cleaning. Because with noise like that, there's bound to be some metal in there.

X2 from above but also may be the spider gears. This noise sound any different going around corners? I would also just pull the diff cover and inspect everything thoroughly. Take pics of the ring gear and the spider gears. As well as what the fluid looks like.

Thank you both for your input. The noise is the same when driving straight or cornering. I'm going to be getting underneath that thing this morning. I'll post any pics or findings. Going to get it on jack stands this morning and turn the wheels to see exactly where the knock is coming from. It seems to be coming more from the slip yoke / TC than from the rear. If it is the rear end, well, that's my opportunity for an 8.8 swap.

Okay....so found the problem was actually twofold. First issue was a tooth from the pinion gear that broke off. The knocking was coming from the spider gears. The differential shaft lock has quite a bit of play. Tried to tighten the lock bolt, but it's sheared off inside. Can't get an EZ-Out in there either. Time to get around to swapping axles out now. So.....anyone in SoCal have a set of axles with 4.10's for sale?

Go to a local pick and pull, find an 8.8 out of an explorer. I've spent about $350 on the axle and all to mount mine. Now I'm just waiting on a welder. Plus I got it with 4.10 and an LSD. I would suggest you spend the money on a axle swap then the D35. Once the spiders toady to get destroyed the axle is bending to much during a load or is bent already.

Agreed 2xs, I'm gonna see how yours is coming. But if he is on a budget or just plain does not have the money. I picked up mine for $160 with an LSD. And correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Spartans about $200? If I had gotten one without I'd be in it $360. And budget is definitely it on my side. But my suggestion to get an LSD was more for get it and if you want to change it out later there is no "oops should have done this" type problems. You got it so enjoy it and it should be to much more for one with than one without.

Been looking through Craigslist and eBay for some axles. Nothing catching my eyes yet. 2xs....I looked through your build thread. Looks good! AllMudd, where in SoCal are you. Was just at Pick Your Part in San Diego a few weeks back. Very slim pickins out there.

Got my 8.8 at the local Pick&Pull in Windsor for $150.

I got it a year ago, I am on a budget, and JUST got the spartan, I have been collecting stuff as I go in, Time is not a factor for me tho as my 35 is still going strong!

Im at the point I need Brake Rotors, and new pins for my springs (my lift came with built in shims).
Also need to build brake lines, but ill do that after I get it in and ready to weld.
