Dropping front drive shaft

Can I just remove the front drive shaft without needed to plug anything up?

88 Wrangler, inline 6, 5 spd, 8.8 rear end w/3.73 gearing, lifted, mud tires, sound bar w/cd player, Olympic Rock Slider, tube front bumper, herculined and the rest is pretty much stock

Just be sure to tape the U-Joint caps so they don't fall off.
