ECU from 95 on 94

A buddy of mine is trying to put an ECU from a 95 4-banger 5-speed in 94 of the same configuration. Someone told him that those are different and he needs to look at those numbers on the side of the unit. Is that true at all? Or it's to make sure it is not the unit from 4.0?

Mine in the 94' had to be programed to the VIN. It would only work if they were the exact same. As in; same number of cylinders, same gear ratios in the gear box and rear end and the same transmision.
