Engine advice

Hey all,
I have a 93 yj 2.5L/5sp. The little puppy is still in awesome condition w/ less than 80K miles on it. I have rebuilt the transmission and transfer case, steering box, new radiator, and so on.
Problem is, that typical jeep 4 cylinder tick has turn to an almost contant sound, much the same as valve knocking. It only does it once the engin reaches "operating temp", and even then it is not a constant, almost as if the jeep does it only when it wants to, whether going uphill, downhill, flat, accelerating or decellerating, when it decides to start the bad valve chattering its there to stay.
I have always been a jeep person, and this little guy has given 14 years of fun and adventure,and I love not having a car payment.
Question is, is it worth the cost of a remanufactured engine or not? Further, should I swap it for another 2.5, or go with a 4.0 and find the wiring harness and control mod from a junk yard?
Or do I just trade it in on one of those rugged and durable scion Xb milk boxes? (yeah right!!LOL)
Any thoughts, comments, suggestions greatly appreciated!

my '95 with 83,000 miles does the same thing. i dont wanna go to a 6 cylinder cause im getting 22 mpg out of it on average. beats the crap out of my 13-14 mpg silverado.

is there anyway to fix this? would a mechanic be able to adjust it so the tapping stops or would i be wasting my time and money?

Go V8 if you're going to do a swap. I wouldn't waste the money on a 6 cyl swap.

I would find a reputable engine builder and have the 4 cyl rebuilt before I went with a reman engine. Good Luck.

If your seriously thinking of an engine swap than dont worry about it, and just drive till it pukes. but if your thinking of rebuilding it you might get it looked at before it takes out the block or head.

Ps. it could be a wrist pin. but check all around because it might not be internal at all check the belt muffler and pipe cat
sometimes other stuff can rattle and fake you out. Example : I was driving home just after replacing a wtr pmp. and heard a loud TP,TP,TP,TP but when I pushed on the clutch it would quit and back at it when let off the clutch. I thought for sure I smoked the motor. but after worring for 2miles I looked under the hood. my belt had split about a 1/4 in off that was wrapped around the fan and slapping the fan shrowed.

good luck cant make your decision but I deffently wouldnt by scion........

Would someone address the part of the question concerning the "normal" valve chatter on this engine. Mine is an 95 with 115k and it chatters all the time. Uses no oil and gets around 18-20 mpg with an automatic. I have no real performance issues other than those that come from the lack of power for on road use. Should I worry about engine life using the jeep for a daily driver and hunting/fishing trips? I'll be putting about 9-10k per year on it.

Mine does the same thing. I was told its the timing chain knocking and that they just do that. But I dont know, I need to check it also.

I went ahead and opted to go ahead and have the engine replaced w/ another 2.5L. All in All it is going to set me back about $2K. But considering the engine comes w/ a "lifetime" warranty, figured it would be an ok option. But wanted to get it done soon before the engine gave up the ghost and screwed any chance of getting a core exchange for it.
BU tI have to agree w/ the gas mileage comments. I slapped one of the K&N filters, a throttle body spacer, high flow cat. coverter, flowmaster muffler and a mandrel bent tail pipe section, then filled up the fluids w/ royal purple. I get tons better MPG than my wifes ZX3.
I am going though withdrawals at this point, 5 days with out my jeep has seemed like a lifetime!

Oh yeah...one thing....if anybody wants to look into a a swap for a 4.0 (not sure if the ax5 tranny can hook up), but jeepsareus.com lists having 4.0's w/ wiring harness and control module, complete for like $850 plus shipping. I assume these are engines from swap outs.

my 2.5 has a tapping noise also. I had it looked over by a mechanic and he told me it could be a number of things but it was prolly my valves tapping. No big deal. With 120,000 miles on it, its bound to make a few noises. No lose of power and I still get around 20 mpg.

Got the little puppy back the other day, all I can say is SWEEET! The new engine is lacking a little in the power department, but its getting better everyday. If I can survive the gas usage during the break in period things will be just fine.
Now its time to start the process of changing this jeep from a daily driver "ken and barbie" stock jeep to something a little more aggressive and capable. As we all know great jeeps are not bought, they are built. Planning on starting with a gear swap in the diff's, move up from the stock tire size, and a lift.
The engine and drivetrain have been taken care of, now to move on to the meat and potatoes..(by stock in visa!)

Sounds like you are on your way. Plan well so you don't have to do things twice. Save your pennies and get the best parts the first time.

and here comes problems rearing their ugly heads

Just got a little over 650 miles on the engine, it has started to idel really rough, and doing this hic-cup kind of thingg where it feels like something is trying to seize up. Oil pressure is fine, oil level is fine, oil color is fine, it doesnt do it all the time, mostly when I am just cruising along at a steady speed, then HIC-CUP, the whole thing shudders, then right back to normal again.
Took it into the shop told them hat was up they kept it for a day went in the next day, was told the timing was off a little..
cool..wasfine for about 4 days and the hiccuping started again, rough idling, called back, was told it should work itself out (?)
tonight it did the hiiccup thing about 5 times in less than 8 miles of travel, and this weird screeching noise is eminating from under the hood, not like a belt or pully either.
Decided to park it until I can have it towed to the off road shop that installed the engine....I think I may be a little less happy when I go in, this is getting old when you drop several grand for a 4 banger installation, and you did it for preventative reasons in the first place, it sucks that it comes back running worse than when you put it in.

That really sucks, mine has about 150,000 on it. Its been making alot of noise for about 50,000 miles. Ive been told its just the upper timing chain gear slaping, nothing to stress over. You prob should have left it alone.
