Unhappy Engine knock

I've got a problem. The problem is that there is a knock coming from the engine. I thought it may have been the engine fans clutch, but i was wrong, so after replacing that the noises coming from the engine bay has become quieter. I think that it is probably the water pump because it has a slighty wobble when the engine is running. But is also sounds like the clunk could be coming from the top of the engine block. Any idea on how to fix the problem?

If you think the water pump is bad feel the shaft for play if there is some replace it. Puting higher octane fuel in isn't the solution. How many miles on it?

how do you know his gas stations dont have 80 octane rating?

I'd put the best fuel you got and see if it still knocks (no need for a full tank, as long as you use up all or most of the lower octane stuff first). If it stops then i'd do a sea foam treatment to remove carbon deposits

a slight knock is almost normal in 4.0's, very slight small knock is ok. nothing harsh, sharp, loud, or felt right?

you're so close i could take a listen if you'd like. i work in libertyville

wow, sorry bout me kinda disappearing from this thread, but tomorrow the plan is to replace the water pump to see if that will solve the problem. My sister is hoping cause she who drives it. We haven't tried higher octane yet. But if the water pump isn't the problem then we'll try that. And maybe i'll start checking my own threads more often but thanks for the input. i'll keep you posted. And someone asked how many miles: 110,000ish

so got off all the parts to replace the radiator to realize that we had ordered the reverse spin water pump instead of the forward spin

I don't see why you wouldn't try using higher octane fuel first. It's the cheapest option to try.

honestly, i had forgotten all about this tread until last night and by that point we already had gotten all of the parts for the new cooling system...if this doesn't work then that is first on the list.

Actually the cheapest fix would be to remove the belts and start the engine to see if the engine knocks. If it does it's in the engine. If it doesen't then it's in one of the components(such as pump)that are driven by the belt.THen go from there.

so we got the new water pump and radiator in, and, well, it is still making the noise. At leas t the engine seems to run a little stronger but one of my sister's friends is a mechanic and says that it is possibly a bearing in the engine he says not to drive it but we are going to go try to get the noise to go away by putting in premium. Beyond that idk. Someone sayed that they work pretty close to me and could listen to it to try and figure it out, i think it was Dave? i'll keep you updated

so, we think we have final pin pointed the problem. idk about the 4.0 liter but on the 4.2 liter there are 2 pulleys attached to the crank. The front pulley is fine and the belt goes from it, to the water pump, to the A/C. The second pulley behind the first is very wobbly and goes to the water pump and power steering...which has be a problem lately too...to we aren't even going to try to fix this on our own and its going in for an estimate tomorrow

over fill the oil by a little, that should smooth out a slight knock. or use one quart of heavier wieght oil. also check spark plug cables, make sure they arent arching. mine were/ still are. haha reminds me i have to go buy some zip ties or clips for those.

well, a few days ago we figured out that the noises were the pulleys, so we took them off and found out that the vibration dampener was missing. All it was is a rubber seal, so we replaced it with weather stripping and now it works fine
