Engine oil in the breather

I am getting engine oil in my breather where is it coming from? There are i think only 2 spots it can come from the pcv valve is in the front of the motor and there is another fitting that is simular to the pcv valve in the back that also hooks up to the breather with only a small foam screen on the inside of were it goes threw the breather. Its the 4.2 motor with auto trans.

More than likely you need a new PCV valve. I believe what happens when the PCV gets plugged is that excess pressure is built up in the crank case, and it pushes the oil up into the breather through the tube that's in the back. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I had the same thing and that is what appeared to be happening. There are other more serious things that can cause it like excessive piston ring wear, but I would start with replacing the PCV and cleaning out or replacing all of those lines.

I would change the PCV but it is normal to get some oil in the breather. It vents oil vapors through it so you will get oil. It should be changed whenever you change the PCV or with a tune up. If everything else seems to be fine I would say it's normal. I also wipe out the inside of the air cleaner and rotate the air filter, if it doesn't need to be changed, when I do that type of maintenance.

Mine did that too, I installed another PCV in the back hole and it helped some, but the PO ran it HOT, so I think my rings are bad! If I pull my Bateau or my 4wheeler trailer, or just drive Hwy. 61 at 70mph it blows oil out the Dip Stick!

Not legally, there is an ATV Park down by Greensburg La., not sure if you can Jeep or not. Most every thing is Posted! We just ride the back roads by the Lake, and do some Nite Rides by the house at Cat Island NWR,

Allright i installed a new pcv valve and also installed a pcv valve on the hole in the back of the valve cover that goes to the breather, it spoped the oil from going in to the breather but it's seaping around the oil filler cap and the rubber gromets that the pcv valves are in. When the motor is running and i pull the oil filler cap off there is some pressure that is released, it's not alot but it's driving me nuts. Is there some kind of oil filler cap that's like a filter or some kind of filter that i can put on the back valve cover hole that works like a breather or a vent.

I recently did the nutter by-pass and i did the team rush up grade today and man what a difference it made but the oil issue is gona make me pull out what hair i have left. The motor is the 4.2 and has 202,000 miles on it if that helps any.

Is the valve cover filled with oil? could be a plugged oil return but it sounds like excessive blow-by. They do make breather filler caps, you can probably get one at a decent auto parts store or auto race parts place.

No the valve cover is not full of oil and seams to be draining fine. I've pulled the filler cap while its running and u can see the oil coming threw the pushrods and it seems to be the right level.

Your 4.2 shouldn't have a PCV in the rear. That's actually going to limit the proper venting of the system. How much oil is actually pushing through into the air cleaner. It's normal for oil to come through but it's not supposed to pour through either. There could be some issues with that type of mileage but unless it's pouring in I would consider leaving the system to operate the way it was designed.

Its not a whole lot but its more than should be. Im gona remove the extra pcv valve and let it go back in the breather, at least i cant see it in there. It just drives me crazy if something is not right, more than likely with that many miles its got wear on the rings and cylinders and thats whats causing the blow back.

had same problem with oil in air filter. check the hose going from back of carb to the PVC valve & see if it is clogged. there should be a restrictor orifice in this line. it was plugged on mine, not allowing crankcase to breath properly. with engine running, there should be suction on PVC valve. good luck.

My 90-Sahara had this orifice... it was about 6" downstream from the PCV valve... I read somewhere this piece (a coupler) was inserted as a dealer recall to stop the oil soak problem in the air cleaner (and the subsequent oil use)

The center hole in this black plastic coupler is quite small actually, around 3/32" or so

It was probably cheaper and easier than redesigning the valve cover baffles and doing retro-fits... they just reduced the suction

That second part at the rear is a filter not a valve. I have been told they are a dealer only part. I think the part numer is 5300-2466. If you got to Morris 4x4s web site (www.jeep4x4center.com) at the bottom they have a section "Jeep Resoures" that includes the Jeep parts catalog complete with schematics. Look under the Emmissions section. It is a big mother over a 1000 pages but handy to have.

I checked the pcv valve for suction today and there was none so i removed the line going from the pcv and it was stoped up at the orfice, i removed the orfice and changed out the hose with new and so far the oil has stoped seaping around the ruber gromets and the oil filler cap. Gona drive it some more and see if it stops going in the breather. Thanks for all the help this is a great site!!!!!!!!!!!!!
