Engine Part Dilemma

I'm trying to put a name to this little pipe depicted in this diagram. It's the piece that starts at the bolts and ends at the nut. All I know is that mine was temporarily fixed with a hose, but that could not withstand the amount of pressure that passes through it and it blew last Tuesday. I want to replace it before I get out on the road again, because I'm not sure what kind of damage that it could further cause my engine. Anybody know what it is?

Apparently it's the EGR tube. I must have over looked it in the diagram. Anyway, that little son of a gun is giving me trouble. Without the proper EGR set up I have lost a substantial amount of power (I noticed it right away when my temporary hose blew) and my engine sounds pretty bad. What should I do to fix my problem and get this thing replaced correctly?

...find an EGR tube from the auto parts store or you'll suffer poor gas mileage due to an excessive rich fuel air mixture. A rich fuel to air mixture (too much fuel) will cause excessive carbon on your spark plugs and foul them out. After you get a new EGR tube I'd check the plugs too.

How does the EGR tube play it's role in maintaining a good air fuel mixture?

Thanks for the info. I've only had my Wrangler for about a week now and its pretty fun learning about different parts. I don't have a service manual yet. This is a little off topic, but jeepjones, does your last name happen to be Jones?

I was just thinking about going down to the ecology auto parts and picking off an EGR tube from a wrangler sitting in the yard. However, I'm not sure of my chances of landing a 1990 wrangler with 4 cylinders. Would an EGR tube from another year suffice? Possibly a six cylinder EGR tube? I just called the Cerritos, CA ecology auto parts and they told me that they don't have a list of the vehicles in the yard, thus my efforts could be in vain if I show up and there aren't any Wranglers lying around. How should I go about using an ecology auto parts to my advantage?

technically it doesn't, but the mix is meant for a certain displacement and the EGR being disconnected changes that volume.

A larger concern is that with the EGR tube not being attached, you have both a major vacuum leak and a minor exhaust leak... the vacuum leak is what is causing your loss of power. at the point in the diagram where it says "NUT", duct tape a quarter over the open hole as a TEMPORARY fix. It should run similar to normal (possibly better if the duct tape holds well) and will run hot (so don't wail on it).

I think all 4 cyl Jeeps got the same engine from like '80 to present (do they still put 4 bangers in jeeps?) so any jeep with a 4 cyl has a fair chance of having a tube that'll work, but have you priced it at a parts store? I'd be surprised if it was over $20

or you can shop around for a plug...



or if you can't find one to fit, find a fitting the right size (the one that came out of it is a good candidate) and fill it with JB weld...



but either method is illegal for on road use in a 1990

I tried calling 2 kragen auto parts stores, but they said that the piece did not show up in their inventory data base and suggested I talk to a dealership. I'm not too fond of going through the dealer until it's the last possible resort. So I'm going to cut the current broken pipe down then fill it with JB Weld like you said until I come across that part.
One of the employees at the second Kragen that I called suggested that I try calling this place in Long Beach, CA called Harvey's Complete Jeep. He didn't have the number so I haven't called them just yet. I still have to call the ecology in Santa fe springs to see if they have any 4 cyl. wranglers. I did call the one in Cerritos, CA, but they didn't have a list of the vehicles in their yard. Also, my mom said she knows of a shop that is dedicated to Jeeps. Basically, I have several avenues to explore.
However, I still have yet to call pep boys, autozone, and napa auto parts.
About the current Wranglers: they haven't made a JK 4 banger. They did offer a diesel 4 banger option for the liberty in 2007 to people outside of the US, because it's emissions weren't up to par.
