Engine troubles

On my home from work today, my motor started to steam. I got home and looked under the hood and noticed that the belt was not attached and the coolant was boiling. Once it cools down I am going to go try and put back on the belt, but I was wondering if it could have done any serious damage to the motor? It was about a 5 mile drive with the engine steaming. Also what would have caused the belt to detach and is there any way to prevent this?

belts wear out and break. if the belt is whole and off, a pulley could have slipped releasing all the tension off of it. if it was steaming, it was overheating. you could have done damage, it just depends on how hot it got.

if the belt fell of there's a problem, simply putting it back on won't work for very long. unless someone just put it on, and it was very loose, but you'd hear squeaking or something. check your pulleys, and tensioner and all that.

I put the belt back on and it works fine. There seems to be no problems. Is there a possibility of problems coming up in the future due to the engine steaming?

Yeah theres a few, id just keep an eye on your temp gauge and your fluid lvls for a few weeks to make sure nothing is leaking/burning out. also try to see if youve lost any power since it did that and if you havent, you should be okay... but Id ask JpDoc

check your radiator for signs of oil and your oil for signs of anti freeze. if it all looks good, i wouldnt sweat it. but....i would find out how the belt came off whole......

glad its working now, keep your eye on it. it is very very very rare for a belt to fall off in tact without a cause. when it was off did you check all the pulleys?

and i agree with check fluids and make sure nothing is leaking onto the belt. oh yeah, is your lower shroud missing? possible the slush, snow, or water soaked the belt and made it slip off, though not likely.

hopefully it was a fluke thing. but it will most likely come off again. good luck. and let us konw.

I've been getting some squealing on my belts and the other night during some trail riding my power steering became twitchy... come to find out the power steering belt had actually turned sideways but is still on track. The belts look dry and worn, replacing tomorrow and also checking pulleys and tensioners... jus' my 2cents
