Error Codes

I own a 91 wrangler xj

The Hanes repair book says that you can look at error codes by turning the key on off on off and back on. The codes will show up in the dash were you see the engine check light.

If there is error codes, they will show up one number followed by the second number, and then if there is more than one error code, they will follow.

My question is this. Has anyone done this, and can say that this works????

OK my last jeep was a cj5, 20yrs ago. I inherited this 91 wrangler. Are you saying its not an XJ??

I followed the instructions and all I got was a flashing engine check lite.

Is that good or bad.??

Your Jeep is a YJ. XJ is the Cherokee.

Yes, the Flashing Check Engine Light is Good, it is giving you the CODES, go back and read the instructions.......again.

Get a pen and paper and be ready to write down numbers.
The light is flashing out the codes in numbers,
Example: Flash-Flash (pause) Flash-Flash = 22

When all codes are done it will flash 55.

The list of what the codes mean is in the Haynes Manual. If you do not have AC in the Jeep you may get a "33" code..you can dismiss that one.

wrangler vs cherokee
Your Jeep is a YJ. XJ is the Cherokee.

If its a cherokee, why does it have a wrangler plack on the side.

By the way no numbers showed up between the flashes.

amara8, No actual Digits are going to be displayed, you just need to count the number of times the Engine Light flashes....like Morris Code.

The Manual explains it pretty well, Read the Manual Carefully and Fully.

Perhaps this could be gone about a different way.

Why are you wanting to check codes? Are you having a trouble?

error codes or should I say flashes

Why are you wanting to check codes? Are you having a trouble?
Yeah iam having problems, I just finished putting on a new rear drive shaft. I had to add a inch and a half, replace the slip yoke housing, because the old drive shaft was lost while towing.

Now the dam thing won't start. Its like its cold outside and it just sort of lopes, but won't go beyond the lopeing.

At first I thought it was out of gas or the gas had water in it.
But now I smell gas if I pump the gas pedel.

It has been sitting for three months without runing while I did the drive shaft renewel.

Ok now were getting somewhere. You have a Jeep (YJ) that sat for months and now won't start.

This is the point where I would have to start asking questions too, So I will let others jump in on the No Start Issue, But I think I would start with checking Plugs, Distributer........etc.

my starting problem is not the plugs or the distrib. plenty of spark. I now guss its gas. this gas was bought in LA before the jeep was towed to Twin Falls. There is a big altitude change, plus I don't know when the gas was put in the jeep.
When he got here in Twin Falls the jeep did start and thats when discovered the drive shaft was missing and the front wheel drive did not engage.

I have a 91 Wrangler JK unlimted, with a CJ front end, with Cherokee plaques and 1 YJ temp gauge inside. What do you mean it isn't a wrangler? BTW, What is a wrangler?

Is This Thread A Joke??
