New to the forum. Purchased an '02 Wrangler X in Feb. and love it (been a jeep owner since 72). Recently replaced the fuel bezel with an aftermarket stainless steel unit. Next day, The engine light comes on and stays on. I went to Advanced Auto and they did the free code check and I had three, P0442, P0455, and P1486. The first two are, respectively, small leak in the EVAP system and large leak in the Evap system. The third is a pinched line. First I purchased a new Stant cap and since it was ugly compared to the original, I disassembled both OEM and replacement and put the new threaded portion with the check valve into the old guts. I had to trim the plastic retention units in the new outer cap to free the white plastic unit, kinda making it useless but, $11.00 is cheaper than $32.00. If you have to purchase one, look inside and you will see six little wedges that am taling about. Advanced Auto also erased the codes once at the end of the check. Two days later, the engine light comes back on. I next purchased a Mighty-Vac pump at Harbor Freight and found a bad hose at the intake manifold. This hose connected the manifold to the tube that leads to the Leak Detection Pump (LDP). I took a ride to get some brewskies to watch the Ravens game (they are loosing as I am writing) :http://www.wranglerforum.com/images/smilies/frown.gif-(
, I got out of the Jeep and smelled gas. ??? Got home, checked more things and by LUCK, I played with the gas cap and saw it would wiggle if I pushed on it. The plastic fuel filler neck that is mounted in the metal fill pipe is split. Major leak for the EVAP system. I have the equivalent of Devcon/ JB Weld, and will glue it together permanently. This is a split probably caused by refueling due to the weight of the fuel fill nozzle.
Anyone getting these codes should check the filler neck for a major crack. It is easy to overlook this and get lost looking elsewhere. This is my newest vehicle and I am surprised to see plastic employed at this area. Hope this can help some of you out there.
