Exhaust on 89 yj

Alright guys, I'm looking to put an aggressive sounded exhaust system on my 89 yj. What would be the best for that? Glass packs? Flow master?...etc..thanks! Btw 4.2 liter I6

I think personally your money would be better spent else wear. It's a 6cyl not a v8 and you won't get any major gains from it.

actually the 4.2 stock exhaust is very restrictive and a more open system really helps.
no need for headers, the 4.2 doesn't rev high enough for them. I went with a 2 1/2" magnaflow cat and a magnaflow XL muffler, nice deep sound, sounds great.

My son's jeep had a loud muffler on it by the PO. It broke just behind the cat converter. Had to replace the whole thing from the flange back including the cat converter. Since I was paying for it, I put it back to stock. My teeth no longer chatter and I can hear the radio. After I replaced the muffler, my son's unsolicited comment to me was that he noticed a power bump up. His rubber band drive is a lot less noticeable with the new muffler. I can only speculate that putting the back pressure back to stock has improved power output. I'm not a big fan of the loud exhaust sound. It gets on my nerves the longer I spend in the vehicle. Same thing happened when I had a loud muffler system on my motorcycle when I was a pup. Wouldn't do that again either. What it comes down to I guess is what you can tolerate. My neighbors used to be able to time when my son left for school at 06:30 every day when it was loud. Now they can't tell when he leaves the house. Just remember it probably will not increase the market value of your jeep if it is loud. I would venture a guess that most people like a quiet exhaust system.

I have heard a lot of good things about magnaflow! So far I've narrowed my search down to magnaflow, flowmaster, and dynomax

I love the Ultra Flo Welded on a YJ. Good luck in your search.

You can't really go wrong with any of them imo. I've had flowmasters 40s on several vehicles over the years, got a great sound out of my V6 tacoma. My one complaint was they tend to have a bit of drone on the highway, but considering we're talking about a Wrangler here, a little extra noise is nothing new.
The magnaflow I had on my A4 1.8t sounded great as well. Very docile while putting around town but absolutely screamed when you'd get on it. Keep us posted on what you end up going with!

Im with roadyrob, I have custom magnaflo from the manifold to the back. went with a custom kit so I could build it myself and keep it high and tight. 2.75 from the manifold to a high flow cat, with a magnaflo glasspack. all stainless steel pipe.

Its quiet when putting around town, but when you are out playing and mash on the skinny pedal it has a deep throaty rumble.
