extending the drive shaft

i still haven't bought a jeep, but im trying to take my time and make sure i get a good one.

there is a 92 YJ i am looking at with 64,000 original miles on it, a four inch lift, with what i believe are 32's on it. and it looks awesome.

my question has to do with the lift. i was talking to a friend that is pretty knowledgeable and he mentioned that with that big of a lift, one can run into some pretty big issues with the angle of the drive shaft. i do not know what was actually done to the jeep, i did not check.

if the drive shaft isnt extended, should i spend the 650 for the SYE and the extension? or can you just drop the transfer case? what is the best thing to do?

You have to decide what kind of a set up you want! there are many diffrent ways to do this. It also depends how high you want to go! For me I have a 4 inch lift with a sye with drive shaft that can move in and out! plus I have 4 degree shims on axel to eliminate all vibration, If you go with less lift, the less you will need! get an idea for lift and tire size ( you want) then people can give you a little better Idea of what you will need!

no idea what you are talking about here mate.

and sorry that i wasnt clear. the jeep i am looking at has a four inch rough country lift already installed on it. i looked up the lift kit and it says that it comes with a transfer case drop kit. i was just wondering which is better in a SYE/drive shaft vs. transfer case drop kit.

The shims sit between the axle and leafpack to "turn" the axle upwards to lessen the driveshaft angle. This is easier than cutting off the perches and turning the axle up and rewelding. IMO the transfer case drop without the SYE is a bandaid. The 2 can be used together but if it's one or the other I would rather see a SYE kit on there.

why do you call the transfer case a bandaid?

he is right about the tcase drop being temprary. it is not an accual fix to the problem its just a getto solution. i know. i just did my sye and drive shaft. and the difrancec is amazing!!!

did you us the t/c drop as well as the shims?

i just put a 4" RE lift on my 94yj with a sye and 4 degree shims, and the t/c drop and i still have a small vib. i think i might need a 10 degree shimm job if i don't use the t/c drop.(i don't want to us the t/c drop if possible)

Ok im going to give this a shot correct me if im wrong. But a jeep wrangler is amazing offroading due to its short wheel base. But since it has a short wheelbase the rear drive shaft is really short. When you go for a lift of 4 inches or more the drive shafts angle becomes extremely steep. This causes excessive vibrations which will break ujoints and in extreme cases the transfercases output shaft. So to solve this problem you have to make the angle of the drivline not so steep. What a transfercase drop kit does is it puts the transfercase lower to the ground making the angle of the driveshaft not as steep. Now The slip yoke eliminator or SYE kit shortens the transfercases output shaft by about 4 inches or 7 inches if you go for the extreme version. By doing this it also makes it a fixed yoke and your driveshaft will be 4 to 7 inches to short. So you will need a new driveshaft typically a cv type driveshaft. this will reduce your driveshaft angle much more then a transfercase drop kit. So to make it sound simpler...if you break your leg in the middle of no wheres you make a split so its good enough for now or to get you to a hospital. Getting a cast on your broken leg is the best way to fix a broken leg though. So the transfercase drop kit is a splint. The SYE and cv driveshaft is the cast.

yeah i get the idea and all. i do have a sye and a c/v ds but i'm using a 4 deg. shim AND a t/c drop and still a vib. i don't want to use a t/c drop if i don't have to. it kind of seems as though i'm gonna need like a 10 deg shim or more tho(seems like a lot) and i was wondering if anyone had some input on a similar sitch. im gonna try a 8 deg first i guess and have a 2 on hand in case i guess.
