Failed CA smog test

Just went to get my Jeep slogged, everything passed except the BAR SNAP test. I had visible blue smoke from the tail pipe... From the searches I have done online, since the test is an observation, and not physical test, the pass or fail is up to the smog tech. Makes me kinda grumpy. I was the third fail in a row at the shop. In fact, the entire time I was there, no one passed. Anyway, I acknowledge that my Jeep may smoke a little and I am looking for a cost effective and legal way yo get my little YJ to make the state of CA happy. Any suggestions that any of you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

Try a different shop? I went to two (shady) shops who swore up and down there would be no way my YJ would pass smog. I argued the new catalytic converter would say otherwise. The third shop, which I looked up reviews for, was courteous and it passed with flying colors. In fact the shop owner said it had some of the cleanest emission he'd ever seen. I'd also like to point out the first two crappy shops were still pushing to take my money, even though they "couldn't say for sure" whether the visual inspection items would pass.

Technically, any amount of smoke visible from the tail pipe or PCV is cause for a fail.

As suggested already, try a different smog test center. Some smog techs can be sticklers to the book, others might let you slide on minor things.

Other than trying a different station, that's a tough one. Are you burning oil? Mine failed the first test. I ran several bottles of Guaranteed to Pass, cleaned my throttle body and every emission hose and valve. I switched or cleaned all my sensors, tuned it up, changed the oil. Can't tell you which if these did it, but I would concentrate on cleaning the carbon out, may want to pull the valve cover and clean out the inside, maybe a Sea Foam flush.

Did you replace your PCV valve? I would try that, sometimes a bad PCV can cause blue smoke.

Jeff I can tell you what we use to do to get cars to pass. First we did an oil change to straight 50 weight Dino oil. Then we put about 5 gallons of 100 octane "Chevron" unleaded race gas in a nearly empty tank. It burns so clean and hot it is amazing. Those two things passed a lot of cars. No multi grades or synthetics.

Did a retest today and passed. Had better numbers, and no issues. Thanks to everyone for the feed back.
