Failed Emissions, Need some Advice

So I recently had my 89 Wrangler emission tested and it failed... bad. Carbon Monoxide output was over 160 when it should be under 25.

After some checking, I've determined it's most likely my carburetor. Long story short, it was built wrong twice by a shop.

Basically, it's time for a new carburetor as I can't afford to get Fuel Injection or and throttle body injection is a bit much at this time.

Do you guys have any input on a good carburetor for an 89 Wrangler 4.2L 258 cubic inch (I believe).

I've heard Weber Carbs are good, but also can be touchy.

Thanks!

P.S. First Post & I did do some searching with that handy search feature.

I'd try seafoaming the whole system before swapping out the carp, its a lot cheaper and a lot easier and usually will make you squeek by inspection

Check out this post from another thread, it details the whole process

Part one works the same for carburetors too

what are the other numbers, HC, Nox. just from that number it apears to be running rich. did you do full tune up, change oil before test? I don't work on the early year YJ's but I believe there's an O2 sensor, I'd start there before new carb.

if it was the O2 sensor he would have a cel.
IIRC the 89 has 2 O2 sensors.
I would assume if he has a cellight on they would stop the inspection at that point course I've been wrong before.lol

It's running really rich, no doubt. I think I could get it to pass if need be with out swapping out the carb. However, I believe this stock 20 yr carb has had its day. It's given me more trouble than it's worth. I ready for a new one.

I'll check out the seafoam idea.

I'll post other numbers when I get back to work, as I have the paper there.

What do you guys think about the Weber Carburetor Kit 32/36mm DGEV #K551

Thanks!

Carb upgrade?

I've just replaced my crappy old Carter with a Motorcraft 2100 upgrade kit that I bought from Michael Ehrmann on Ebay for less than $300 (PM me if you need details)

Whilst I dont have the hassle of emissions testing, he does do smog-kit versions.

There may be cheaper ways, but I'm really pleased with it and it was EASY with the instructions he sent. Took less than 3 hrs to fit, by an idiot like me. Worked first time out of the box, even the first carb-filling crank took less time than a regular morning start.

Smooth runnings!
Andy
