I need an opinion. Im looking at buying my first Jeep and it is an 89 YJ 2.5L 5 speed. The frame at the rear shackle points has no rust. The inside of the body has some small surface areas most notably the radio rack, but I take it with a grain of salt as its from 1989 and paint does peel. When looking at the undercarriage I couldnt help but notice the surface rust. Yes this is not a newer vehicle but the leaf spring/U-bolt area just seemed coated with surface rust. Im no stranger to ORV's but was just wondering if this is typical. I can deal with cosmetics. I read alot on here and everyone talks about the body and frame as the big rust points. what about the under carriage? Could someone give me a buy or do not buy example or explanation. The price asked is under $3k. The vehicle will be more of an intown/knockaround/ hunting/farm trip vehicle.
If it's just scaley surface rust then I wouldn't worry too much. If the metal has started to pit and flake at the edges then keep looking. The spings would have to rust REAL bad to be detrimental to their integrity. They are not painted so naturally they are going to rust a little.
You didn't say where you were from. It doesn't 100% gauruntee you a rust free Jeep but one from the south with have better odds than on from the north. They don't call it the rust belt for nothing ya know.
For under 3K you can't expect much but you don't have to settle either. Buying a rusty POS will end up costing you more in the long run anyhow.
Exactly...i dont want a bucket of rust. However Im from Maryland...and used to seeing that tough surface rust that looks like solid mud. The frame itself is matte black in most areas especially around the shackle areas. Im looking for a general opinion on surface race on linkages, axels etc. From what I can tell, the frame is most important.
You should be fine with that purchase, seen a lot worse go down the road for a lot more. check the frame above rear shackles, the frame arear for transmission skid plate bolts, floorboards, when you see any spray paint it generally covers up the rusty areas a bit.
I inspected those places when I looked at it. There was some flaking paint on the bottom of the grill. A little surface rust along the dash. nothing major or rotting though, excpet the exhaust hanger bracket in the rear looked a brittle. My main concern was the frame based on what you all talk about on here.
Thanks for the comments buildem . I really appreciate it.
yup, that thing looks as good as my south texas jeep looks

awesome. So what is the first thing I do when I pick it up...besides register it. I thought about tackling some rust. Like going through and scraping everyhting I can of or treating it. I guess i would need to do a tune up...is there a sticky or a guide for that? any suggestions?
