First Jeep! Stereo installation help?

OK so i recently bought a 91 Sahara wrangler for my first vehicle, and the stereo is pretty blown out, and it sucks not to have any music, id also like to hook it up to my phone for music. Any suggestions on how to hook it up and what kind of setup i should be using? im new to WF too

Welcome! My Jeep had a radio that was shot as well and I went to Autozone and bought a cheap cassette/radio that has an AUX plug so I can use my Ipod. I think I paid $29.95 for it and it works enough for me so I have some tunes, know what I mean?

You will have a lot of choices, it all depends on how much $$$ you want to spend.

I was planning on that but what about speakers also, those are shot its all mumble, and blare. I was thinking about a sub of some sort but i honestly have no idea how any of that sort of stuff works.

If you decide to get new speakers and a sub I would suggest going to crutch field and get marine quality speakers. This way if you doors and top are off and it rains it won't ruin you're system. They can tell you exactly what size speakers will fit in your jeep.

I replaced my soundbar speakers with some Memphis speakers, and they are reallyyyy nice! Made me realize that you don't haaaavvee to go name brand if you want good sound, so I would suggest to go to a local audio place or something like that and test some out and compare what you like and what you don't for the money. Just my 2 cents atleast...and welcome!!

Never buy cheap audio equipment. It will sound worse than hearing nothing.

Ill have to disagree too. Althoughhhh you can get allot nicer sound quality for a little bit more money. Just depends on what you want and how much you wanna spend.

Yj should have 4x6 dash speakers. They're some of the worst to change, having done it for a paycheck for so many years. Also cheap manufacturers don't make that size any more. So pioneer is your best bet for cheap quality (oxymoron). Marine speakers are mostly a gimmick to spend more $. Most decent brands offer polypropylene cones and uv protected rubber surrounds. If you really need waterproof speakers, what are you doing with your jeep? If you mud a lot or go topless, a marine cover for the radio isn't bad. Just ugly. Buy a cheap cassette deck and a $5 cassette adapter to plug into your phone. If it's stolen, you won't care. I didn't when mine finally was. Good luck.

I started with 4x6 in the dash. Sounded better, but they are all treble/high-freq stuff. I wanted bass so I added a sub (this required an amp). sounded good, then I found a deal on a soundbar...once I added that it was considerably better. The six-spkr soundbar has 2 five-inch spkrs and some small tweeters. This made the sound complete with the mid-range it provided. There's a lot that goes into getting a "good" system, decide how much you want to spend and then start making decisions. There's a good thread here where somebody is just using an ipod and no receiver.

Don't wast your money on marine speakers ....you can waterproof them by getting a simple silicone spray at walmart in the automotive section ....been doing it for years and never had a problem!

Pyle sells a radio with AUX, USB & SD card slots with no CD player for about $30. Works great for me since I only listen to Sirius and my mp3 player.

I bought a Sony am/fm,cd, bluetooth, Pandora stereo at Pep Boys in February for $99. It is located in a Tuffy overhead console. I have two 6 Alpine speakers in the doors (when they are on) and two 6x9's in boxes on each rear wheel well. I bought both sets of speakers on Craigslist and paid $25 for each set and $20 for the speaker boxes.

Does anyone know what to look for to power the radio? My radio turns off when I turn the car off. Just like you disconnect the battery. Annoying because its an aftermarket Panasonic and tries to take me through the setup every time I turn on the jeep. Just going to pull it out but not sure what to look for.

You did good on the marine speakers... It's a great way to get good sound an not have to worry bout the moisture gettn to them. I also put a kenwood marine CD player with USB in mine. Was at a good price too. Crutch field got good prices on the marine stuff. It's been poured on a few times from rain an pressure washer lol still like new!

You need to tap a 12v constant wire. Under the dash by the fuse box. Just look for one thats always 12v. That will give you your radio memory.

So which ones are common to tap into? Just wondering if there is a preferred point to hit into that are constant 12v.

I guess it's possible I'm already tapped in but have a blown fuse now that you mention it. Guess ill dig this weekend.
