Floating Gas Hand

Just purchased a 1989 YJ, Wife and son ran out of gas tonight because of the very anoying floating gas hand, floating around 1/4 but it ran out bone dry. Is there anything to try other than dropping the gas tank to fix this?

From what I read it might be easier to get gas more often than fix the gauge issue. They talked about it in a JP mag from this year. Sorry can't recall much more than that.

I've notice on my YJ, that when I fill up, the fuel gauge reads about 1/4 tank full *over* the FULL mark. Keeping that in mind, when the fuel gauge reads around 1/4 left in the tank, what it really means is that I'm almost out of fuel.

It's an obvious fault in the FUEL Gauge, but I've learned to work around it and would rather spend hard cash on things that can keep my Jeep out on the trail.

CJs and YJs are notorious for inaccurate fuel gauges.

I have this page bookmarked for helping me with gauges on my CJ, not sure what changes happened for early YJ. Worth reading though. The usual suspect is a defective ground wire - after 20 years, that'll happen.

My YJ runs out when the gauge reads 1/3 full. I watch the gauge swing all over the place and when it stops swinging you better find a gas station. I can only get about 12.5 gallons in mine and with 9 mpg I know where all the stations are.
Check here. YJ Gas Gauge Sending Unit Modification

I have ran out twice this summer, glad I am not the only one with the gauage issues, once embassingly enough in the ex husbands driveway (he was nice enough to go get me some gas )and the other right dang in front of a gas station

Dropping the tank isn't that difficult if you have help.

I have the same issue. I've run out more than a few times while using the 'fingers crossed' method (total procrastinator). I read a helpful tip on here somewhere a while back. Turn your key to the 'on' position, but don't start the Jeep. The reading you get is relatively accurate, compared to the swinging needle. Not sure if this will work for you, but it's worth checking. Also, I hit my trip counter when I put gas in...helps me estimate what I should have in there.

and this was the offending part of my gauge problem. the contact arm needed a little tweak to get it to make good contact. You can also shorten the tube to get more fuel capacity while you're at it.

i got one for the smart peoples in the room, ok i got a 20 gallon tank and when i run out of gas i can only put in 13 gallons or so into it before its full to the top. and if i could use my full 20 gal im on E when i got 8-10 gal left in the tank nice way to measure a half tank, and to take short cuts to gas stations through constructions zones...not that any jeep owner would ever cut through a construction zone for the hell of it.

Abomination93:
Talk to skeeter about dropping or replacing your fuel tank.
