Flywheel cover

I'm new to this site having just recently acquired a 1988 Wrangler Sahara Automatic 4.2 engine. I notice that I can visually see the flywheel. There is a steel plate on the left side from the front but the rest of the area is open to the environment. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or do I have a cover missing.

You have a cover missing. There is supposed to be a cover plate, called an inspection plate that is slid up in and bolted to the bottom of the bell-housing. it is designed to keep mud and debre out of the bell housing.
